With pristine beaches and a warm climate all-year round, a destination wedding in Thailand calls for a tropical-themed celebration. When it comes to what to wear, there’s a lot to plan.

Whether you’re hosting the wedding or attending as a guest, you’ll want to pack your most stylish outfits for the celebration. But depending on the season of the year, your favourite dress might not be the best option for Thailand’s heat and humidity.

Fortunately, we’ve helped many Aussie couples plan their weddings in Thailand, so we know exactly how to dress for the occasion and also for the temperature. Keep reading to get some inspo for your upcoming destination wedding wardrobe.

For the bride

For brides-to-be, the wedding dress is probably the most important element of the celebration.  For daytime ceremonies, breathable materials like cotton, linen, or silk are ideal for keeping you cool and comfortable. Although they appear more casual, these fabrics are popular for the boho-chic aesthetic, which is the perfect fit for a beachfront setting.

If you have a penchant for dramatic looks, you can always add statement accessories to accentuate your dress, or wear vibrant tones instead of classic white. Feel free to change into a second outfit for the reception: a dress with a relaxed silhouette or a two-piece set is perfect for dancing the night away. If the air gets too breezy, a shawl or cardigan is a stylish and practical addition to your ensemble.

When it comes to footwear, open-toe sandals or wedges offer a semi-formal feel and easy movement on the sand. If you’re planning a celebration on the resort grounds, feel free to elevate your look with a pair of stilettos.

For the groom

For a beachside celebration, the groom can keep it classy with a suit, or opt for something more casual. Black suits are a popular choice for weddings, but they absorb heat in tropical climates; so instead, consider light, neutral tones like beige, light grey, green, or blue. If you’re keeping the suit, make sure to pick breathable materials like linen or lightweight wool for better air circulation.

Meanwhile, a button up shirt with khakis and loafers is a practical yet sophisticated ensemble for tropical celebrations. Depending on the wedding theme, you can wear shirts in neutral colours, or add a touch of fun with bold patterns.

For the parents

The parents are probably feeling just as celebratory as the couple themselves. To help them feel included in the festivities, the newlyweds’ parents may wear outfits with a colour palette that matches or complements the rest of the wedding party. Alternatively, you can create a cohesive look with matching ties or accessories. Another classic (and practical) touch to consider is ordering a special set of corsages and boutonnieres just for the parents.

For the wedding guests

If you’ve been invited to a wedding in Thailand, you’ll probably feel tempted to shop for the occasion. Before you start browsing, keep the hot and humid weather in mind and choose an outfit that’s stylish but also practical and comfortable.

For beachside ceremonies, it’s ideal to wear outfits with relaxed silhouettes and breathable fabrics. A sleeveless dress or button-up shirt will keep you cool, comfortable, and in theme with the coastal setting. If you’re planning to wear something simpler, don’t hesitate to add some accents to your ensemble with statement jewellery pieces or a pair of chic sunglasses.

Culturally appropriate dress guidelines

It’s important to dress respectfully and modestly when attending a traditional ceremony in Thailand. That means no overly revealing clothes for women and no t-shirts or shorts for men. You’ll also want to wear shoes that are easy to remove, as you may need to take them off before entering a religious venue.

Wearing black is generally frowned upon, as black is a colour often associated with funerals. However, exceptions apply for black shoes and trousers. If you ever feel doubtful, always check in with the couple or your planner for reassurance.
