A wedding is like a feature film. There are main characters, a story arc, and a list of credits. And the guy putting all of this together, and the story’s narrator? That’s Tommy Chats.

Tommy Chats’ signature style is his enviable moustache, roving mic, and his uncanny ability to make even the most camera-shy guest spill their sweetest, funniest, or (in some cases) most unhinged thoughts.

We turned the mic back on Tommy, and chatted all things connection, chaos, and what makes the best wedding content.

How did Tommy even conceptualise this idea? Well, like any good plan, it was a slow burn. Built on thousands of interviews, years in radio and journalism, and a deep instinct for where a wedding’s true heartbeat lives. It wasn’t about the décor or the drone shot, but the guests who walked the couple through life.

“I started interviewing people, and it just clicked,” Tommy explains. “These weren’t sound bites. They were things couples would ache to hear again one day. Their people, in their own words. It stopped being ‘content’ and started feeling like an heirloom.”

The ‘Secret Sauce’ isn’t a microphone — It’s human behaviour

With more than 7,500 interviews under his belt, Tommy reads a room faster than most photographers can adjust a lens. A skill that others don’t possess. He can find who needs reassurance and goes softer with them, he uses humour to help those with nerves, and he steps back for those with confidence and lets them shine.

It’s a craft honed through tone mirroring, pacing, and gentle curiosity — subtle tools that help people forget there’s a camera on them.

“The moustache might help a little,” he laughs, “but it’s really about listening. Once people feel safe, they open up. You can’t fake genuine connection, and cameras can’t capture what doesn’t exist.”

The moments that matter

While every wedding has its wild characters (including the groomsman with five beers and questionable confidence), Tommy says the most unforgettable moments are surprisingly quiet. A proud grandparent. A friend admitting what the couple means to them. A parent finally putting a lifetime of love into words.

“Weddings give people permission,” he says. “They say the love letters they’ve been carrying around in their heads. That’s what you want to preserve.”

More than footage, it’s human storytelling

While most videographers chase flawless visuals, Wedding Chats chases feeling. The result is a film that doesn’t just show what happened — it shows why it mattered.

“Traditional films show you the day. Wedding Chats lets you feel it,” Tommy says. “Our films are built from voices, not just visuals. They feel alive because they’re about relationships, not aesthetics.”

Tommy’s approach is shaped by two forces: radio and journalism. Radio taught him that people talk more freely when they feel seen, not rushed. Journalism taught him that the real truth often lives between the lines. Wedding Chats sits at that intersection: human, unscripted, honest storytelling.

If Goose ran the show

His dog, Goose, occasionally attends weddings and would, according to Tommy, ask just one question: “Who’s your favourite person here — and why is it me?”

The Dream Wedding?

Taylor + Travis! Of course! If he could crash any celebrity wedding, Tommy has his answer ready: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.

“Imagine the stories from that room,” he says. “Parents who’ve witnessed every chapter, teammates from worlds that don’t overlap, creatives, athletes. The emotion and the chaos would be premium Wedding Chats material.”
