Expert Advice

As a wedding professional, Mercure Canberra offers expert advice to help couples plan their perfect day. Ask a question or read their expert advice.

do I need wedding venue insurance?

It's not something we've encountered before, but it would totally be up to the bride & groom and what they feel comfortable with. Most venues would already have their own insurance so it would be thier personal choice whether to purchase additional cover.

Has anyone ever had a brunch style wedding reception?

Has anyone ever had a brunch style wedding reception in perth especially and if so where is a good venue that offers This, most people go for afternoon or night time weddings but I really want mine to be in the morning, any ideas or advice would be much appreciated

Hi!

As you are looking in Perth we would be able to put you in contact with some of our sister properties, wer would have our events team contact you :)

HELP! How must does a wedding cost?

I just got engaged (yay!) and I have no idea where to start budgeting. Is there a ballpark figure I should aim for? Then at least I can pick my date :)

Congratulations on your engagement !!

It will depend on the number of guest you would like to have on your special day and also the food & beverage package that you would like to provide.

We always ask our couples what is their dream wedding and how much they ideally would like it to cost. We then go back and work out if we can meet their budget, if yes then Happy Days!

In the case we cannot we would make a few changes and suggestions for you to have a think about, if we are your preferred venue we would continue working on your proposal until we reach a happy agreement :)

How do we have a fun, but affordable wedding in Sydney?

My fiancé and I are looking to have our wedding in feb/mar 2019. Based on what we would both like out of the reception (sit down meal with great food, central dance floor, fun atmosphere for our guests), it is quite hard to find something that doesn’t break the bank. We have roughly 100 guests. Also taking into account we would like the venue to look nice with some decorations etc. we would also like something in Sydney. Any suggestions for reception venues??

Hi Adriana!

Congratulations on the engagement :)

We are based in Canberra however if you are still looking for some assistante please send me your details to events@mercurecanberra.com.au

We can have a chat about your expectation and we would be happy to ask our sister Accor Properties in Sydney to contact you and discuss some options !!

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

what is your response to people saying weddings are overpriced?

Great Question!

@ Mercure Canberra we absolutely love to tailor our Wedding Packages to your expectations and most importantly your Budget.

We feel that by tailoring our proposals as required by the couple our Weddings Set Up and experiences are each very different and unique.

Always feel free to share your expectations.

Hope this Helps! :)

whats the price difference between a weekend and week day wedding?

Do most venues have a discount?

We charge the same price between a weekday & a weekend Wedding.

We base our proposals and packages on a minumum spend, also and most importantlyu on your budget :-)

is a reception with a cash bar tacky?

Not really.

We are accommodating bar options in different ways depending on your expectations and budget.

For example you could do First Round of Beverages on your account followed by a cash bar or perhaps 1 hour only Beverage Package followed by a cash bar.

That way you are providing some beverages without spending too much money.

Hope this helps!

how important is it to view a venue in person?

We would definitely suggest to come in for a site inspection as it will help you visualise the event.

Often we hear our venue is so much better than what they pictured based on images they've seen online.

In the case you are not able to come in, perhaps a family member or a close friend can come in for you and meet our Team. We would also send you loads of pictures!

Public holidays and surcharges?

I'm planning a wedding and my mum thinks Australia day is a great day to get married. Wedding is Jan 2019. Australia day is Saturday and Saturday is a little expensive for my partners family. We were considering the Sunday 27th and the next Monday is the Australia day public holiday Is there any surcharges on Sundays or public holiday long weekends? We just don't want to be swamped in surcharges and have a super expensive wedding

Hi Daniela,

What a great idea and it gives everyone the chance to have a recovery day on the Monday :)

Our pricing doesn't generally change all those types of costs are factored into the package so that there are no hidden surprises and you can see what everything costs from the get go. On a Sunday night we can also look at giving an affordable accommodation rate as well.

Please contact me if you would like to get a proposal to give you a starting point of costs. Nothing is set in stone, we work to how you envision your day!

Thanks,

Ali

why do some venues not allow pets?

Some Hotels & Wedding venues are not pet friendly for multiple reasons.

At Mercure Canberra we are Happy to Welcome your Pets for Accommodation and for your Wedding :-)

If you have guest looking for accommodation in Canberra to attend your wedding give us a call and ask for our "Pampered Pets Package" Inclusive off:

  • Plus a complimentary gift for your pet to take home

Do I need a seating plan?

My reception is a Sunday brunch with about 25-30 guests split between 5 tables (which includes the head table). I will assign seats with place cards but is a seating plan necessary for such a small group?

Brunch Weddings are really lovely :)

In our experience, most of the time our clients did not require a seating plan, plus you will be having place cards  this should enough guidance.

For most of the Brunch Weddings we have hosted, for a group of 20 to 30 guest seating plans are not really necesary to have, the group is more intimate and they usually all know each other already.

Hope this helps!

do i have to book and pay for two venues if theres risk of rain?

or do venues usually have a backup option free of charge?

No Extra Cost for Wet Weather Option!

We would make sure at the time of booking that we also have a wet weather alternative for you on the day Free of Charge.

Do I provide portaloos if my wedding is outside?

If i go with an outdoor venue, do I have to also hire portaloos?

Hi there, our outdoor option is still within the hotel wall so we do have bathroom facilities in the hotel that guests can use.

Thanks,
Ali

How to make your ceremony and reception work in one location?

Im planning to have both my ceremony and my reception in the same room. How would I change the decor etc if everyones still in there lol thanks xx

Hi Cheryl,

Sorry about the delayed response and thank you so much for your question. We are complete flexible in what you may need. We can set the room before the ceremony so that everything is out and ready to go as soon as you have finished the ceremony.

Would you like to come in for an inspection?

Warm Regards,

Ali

Do you have any advice on what to look for in a wedding venue?

there are so many options, I was wondering what I should keep in mind

What is most important to you. If it's the food and wine element, the size, the location, the flexibility you need in a venue all of these things need to be considered. It would be great if you had the time to sit down with your partner and make a list of the things that are most important to you. Once you have a list pick the 3 things that you both like, look for venues that boast those things. At least it a starting point :)

How many guests qualify as a small wedding?

Do venues usually have a minimum?

Every place will be different for us as a venue 40 guests and below would be a small wedding, personally I think 60 is a good small wedding size.

Will venue's charge extra for having more than one type of ceremony?

We will have two types of marriage ceremony

Multicultural Wedding - YAY!

We held a Wedding just this year that had two ceremonies, it was great!

Venues would differ on their pricing depending on how far apart during the day both ceremonies are.

We would suggest to check with each venue how could they accommodate your specific requirements :-)

Will venues generally allow you to take pictures before the ceremony?

I want to do a photo shoot before my wedding in our set-up reception venue, is that too much to ask? Or is that a common thing...?

Absolutely!

We have our beautiful Courtyard Gardens, they are perfect for Wedding Photos and once the reception area is setup, your welcome to take as many photos as you want.

If this is all worked in your overall schedule - it will happend :-)

Do I need security at my venue?

Do most venues provide this or do I need to look around? I don't know if I need it, but we have a large group (210) so I wanted to know if that means I need it? Also what is the ratio of security to guests?

Depending on the size of the group it can not hurt to get some extra bodies to help look after your guests.

I'm considering a midweek or friday/sunday wedding... Should I?

Please help! Is it worth the savings to have a day other than saturday?

Definitely!

It comes down to what you and your partner prefer because the day is all about you two!

A mid-week wedding tends to be smaller and more intimate and it could also be an excuse for your friends and family to take a day off.

Sunday’s are perfect for outdoors, brunch style weeding.

At our property we don’t charge different base on the days of the week.

Hope that helps!

How bad are Sunday night weddings?

I'm planning a Sunday night wedding, but am concerned about guests who may need to work the next day. How are Sunday night weddings usually run? Unfortunately a brunch/lunch wedding doesn't really work for our venue.

@ Mercure Canberra we absolutly love Sunday Weddings!

Sunday nights are quite popular for us, speacilly Weddings from 30 - 60 guests. On a Sunday we can utilise our Beautiful Courtyard Restaurant because it is closed for Public!

If your guess are staying with us we can give them a discounted accommodation rate inclusive of breakfast for Monday morning!

How do I choose the right sized venue for 100 guests?

Do you have any tips on how to choose the right sized venue for this number of guests?

What a great idea would be is to ask the venue if they may be able to set up a mock floor plan for you to come in and see, this way you can get an idea of the space yourself. Let Mercure Canberra know if you would like to organise a site inspection.

Thanks,
Ali

How far in advance should I book my wedding venue?

I don't want to miss out on my dream venue. So, how far in advance should I make the booking?

It really depends on the type of venue that you are looking for and how popular they are for weddings. I think that Port Melbourne Yacht Club answered the question really well and gave a good scope of time frames.

At out venue we have have a booking lead time of 4 months up to 18 months.
