How does our lessons work?

Your wedding dance lesson is a private coaching session with you, your partner and your teacher. Some couples, however, also like to include the other members of their bridal party, or their parents. You just need to advise your wedding dance teacher prior to the first lesson of the numbers that will be attending the lesson.

How soon should we start lessons?

You should try to plan ahead with your dance lessons. Plan your dancing with as much forethought as you would your dress, flowers, cake, cars etc. After all, it will provide a lasting memory of your wedding day, which will linger on long after the last bit of wedding cake has been eaten.

Around the time you are booking your music, DJ or entertainment, is a good time to be organising your first dance lesson. As a general guide you should try to start your lessons 6 – 12 weeks before the wedding if you are wanting something fairly simple, or 3 – 6 months before if you are looking to do something more creative and choreographed.

Make sure you give yourselves enough time before the wedding to get comfortable with your steps and with dancing together.

When can we have lessons?

Lessons are available of an evening or weekend. We will try to find a time that is convenient for you.

How many lessons will we need?

The number of lessons you have is entirely up to you but will depend on the length of time until your wedding, the amount of time in which you have to practise, and on the complexity of the dance routine which you would like to learn. As a general rule, for a basic routine, you should be planning for at least 3 lessons. 5 lessons should see you looking comfortable and able to handle some more interesting choreography. For a more challenging and intricate routine,  you will need 6 lessons plus.

But remember, these are general guides only. It is almost impossible for us to put a number on it until you have been in for your first lesson. It is only then that we are able to assess the amount of learning required to achieve your desired wedding dance, in relation to your ability. Everyone has a different absorption and retention rate when it comes to learning new skills, and each person has different backgrounds and experiences to draw upon, so sometimes one partner can learn the moves quickly but the other partner may take a bit longer. Just remember that it is a partnership, and therefore a team effort, just as your marriage will be.

What should we bring/wear to our first lesson?

Make sure you wear comfortable clothes that you can move easily in. Stretch pants, flared skirts etc. are ideal as your legs will be able to move freely. Shoes should be comfortable with some support. Avoid rubber soles as these grip the floor.

If the wedding is approaching soon, it is a good idea to bring your wedding shoes in to your lesson so that you can get used to dancing in them.Don’t forget to bring in your phone/Ipod with the song, or songs, that you have chosen.

Why is practice so important?

How ready and confident you are will ultimately depend on how much practice you do. Your teacher can only provide you with the knowledge and skills to do your wedding dance, the rest is up to you. We suggest that, as a minimum, you practice for 5 mins a day in between lessons.

Remember, the number of lessons you have is flexible, but ultimately the result you will achieve depends on the effort that you have put in as a couple. Did we mention it was fun?? Trust us – it won’t feel like work!

What happens if the groom is reluctant to take lessons?

Our team is able to give even the most reluctant groom the confidence to succeed on the day.  She is skilled in putting the groom at ease and teaching him steps that he can master with confidence and really impress.

Consider – a bit of nervousness 3 months before the wedding with an understanding teacher is far better than the terror that arises when the MC announces that you are about to do your dance and neither of you has any idea about what you are going to do!
