Expert Advice

As a wedding professional, Dark Room Diva Photography offers expert advice to help couples plan their perfect day. Ask a question or read their expert advice.

How do I stop guests from posting photos on social media before I do?

This is easier said than done.  A few things you can do is ask the celebrant to ask people to put away their cameras, as you have a professional photographer and you would like them present for the day. You can then create a clever #hashtag and ask they they do not post onto social media unless they use the hashtag. You can also ask that they do not post photos of the Bride or Groom, but reception photos are allowed. This gives you a little more control as to where the photos are going.

What are the newest trends in wedding photography?

Trends come and go. Speak to your photographer and let them know the kind of photos you like. I always do a mix of journalistic photos and some fun creative work. The goal is to have the photos tell the story of yiur day. Your photographer will be happy to hear your thoughts.

As a photographer I strive to capture your personalities and all those special moments on the day.

Should our bridal party be an even number?

Is it better to have even numbers for our photographs?

You should have who you want to be beside you on the day. Your photographer will work around the numbers. It's more important you have just those you want near you, and not have extras just to make numbers even, or exclude those you want  for symmetry.

Should we have a "first look"?

The "First Look"is becoming more popular. It's a good way to settle the nerves before the ceremony.  I have done a lot of "First Looks with couples who were wanting a twilight wedding,  So they did a "First Look  followed with the "Photo Shoot.  This works well as it stops the guests having to wait hours between the ceremony and reception, and I notice often guests leave before the reception is over which is very disappointing to the couple.

What I have found is that when it is done like this guests stay longer at the reception, because they ghavent been waiting around all afternoon. We did this for my sons wedding and it was a great success. First look and photoshoot, then a wedding ceremony at sunset and straight into the reception, after a few group photos.

This will ensure happier guests and a reception that has all your guests there til the end.

Why should you hire a professional photographer for your wedding?

A professional photographer does more on the day then just take photos. They are your timekeepers, they will keep you on track. They will herd the families and guests together for those group shots. They are not distracted by friends, or celebrations. They are there to record every moment of your day. Sometimes we find ourselves having to gently pull you away from guests and distractions to get the photos you wanted done. Sometimes we need to keep the bridal party all together. We are focused 100% on you, as that is what we are paid for. A photographer cannot be shy, where friends can feel a little awkward photographing all your guests all day and night.

There is also the technical stuff that a professional photographer has a grip on. And there is a lot of work in the post production, that we do using software programmes to make sure every photo is perfect. Your mates who take great photos may not understand the processing component, nor want to do it as it’s a long and tedious task but needed to make the photos perfect.

You spend a lot of money to create your perfect wedding, and a lot of the day you won’t remember as it fly’s past so quickly, but the only thing you do take away from it after it is all over is the photos. To ensure your photos tell the whole story of your day you need a professional who is experienced and adaptable to make this all happen.

How long will a wedding photographer stay at our wedding reception?

It depends on how long you have booked them and what package you went with. Discuss this with your photographer they can advise you the best package to suit your needs.
