Congratulations on your engagement!
We find there is one main difference between decorators and stylist. Decorators have their own stock (eg. furniture and decor items), where as stylist source and hire these items from decorators. This isn't saying that all stylist don't have their own stock, usually just not as big a variety as decorators. Another way of describing a decorating company is a hire company.

Most people are capable of decorating an event. However, a stylist will have experience with creating a really beautiful space and being able to put things together that work really well in that space. A stylist will be experienced with colour matching, trends, and have a natural creative ability to make the decor look amazing. A great stylist will also work closely with you to ensure that your colour and/or theming requirements are met. I hope that helps you with your question.

A stylist will work with you to create an overall plan for the big day, and the days leading up to the wedding, to help ensure the hassle of many of the arrangements are handled for you.
A good stylist will co-ordinate all the details of all the different suppliers, arrange for the particular furniture, setting and decor to suit your preferences, and work to achieve the "feel" you're hoping for, while allowing your own personality to show in the details and focus of the event
They should be able to co-ordinate and arrange for liaison with the venue, entertainment, photographers, discuss and help with menus, tastings, cake suppliers, florist to name a few of the suppliers you'll need, and ensure all your heart's desires are met beyond expectation.
