One of the most common questions we get asked is: “How much should I budget for wedding decorating?”
The average budget for the decorating/styling a wedding in Melbourne is usually 10%-15% of your total budget. So for an average spend of $35k -$40k on a wedding in melbourne your decorating spend would be around  $3,500- $6,000.

For the amount of $3,000-$5,000, this is typically the bottom end of decorating budgets when it comes to styling a wedding in Melbourne. For this budget range, you would be getting more of the basic essentials. This is not to say that you can’t have a nicely styled and decorated wedding with this budget. What you spend will vary greatly depending on what your wedding priorities are.

How Wedding Decorating Prices are Typically Calculated

When you hire a wedding stylist and decorator like Feel Good Events, the cost is made up of:

  1. Design fee: For planning your styling concept
  2. Hire or purchase costs: For furniture, draping, lighting, florals, etc.
  3. Labour & delivery fees: For setup, pack down, transport, and after hours styling
  4. Damage waiver: Often around 7.5% of hire products costs. In Melbourne this is pretty standard for most wedding hire companies. The damage waiver is for wear and tear or hire equipment and in some cases covers very minor damage or breakages.

Wedding styling isn’t one size fits all. Your budget will depend on many variables and some you may not have considered yet.


1. The Type of Wedding Experience You Want

Start by asking:

  • What do I want my guests to feel when they walk into the venue?
  • Do I want a subtle “Oh, that looks lovely” or a jaw dropping “Wow, this looks amazing!”?
  • The amount of styling you do and the style you choose will greatly influence how your guests feel and the reaction they have when they enter your wedding. The wow factor will cost a lot more than the ‘’oh that looks nice’’ experience.


The more visual impact you want, the higher the cost, it’s that simple.

2. DIY vs Professional Styling

Want to save money? You can DIY your wedding decorating, but it comes with using a lot of your time, effort, and may cause potential stress.

Consider:

  • Can you set everything up in the time allowed?
  • How will items get delivered and packed down?
  • Do you have the creative skills to achieve your desired look?
  • Will the venue require safety inductions or documentation?


The less work you do yourself, the more you’ll pay in labour. 

3. Venue Type and Setup

  • Wedding Venue: May already have stylish elements, reducing your décor needs.
  • Blank canvas or marquee venue: You’ll need to bring in more décor, which increases cost.
  • Home weddings: Often require full setup including furniture, lighting, and flooring.

4. Indoor vs. Outdoor Weddings

Outdoor events often need extra equipment, weatherproofing, and have more restrictions. These can significantly increase decorating costs.

5. Guest Numbers

This is one of the biggest cost drivers. More guests = more tables, chairs, centrepieces, and overall styling.

 

Hidden Costs You Might Miss

When calculating your wedding decorating budget, don’t forget the extras:

  • GST – Be careful that you don’t miss the GST component as a lot of wedding decorating hire companies don’t always show this in their pricing.

Here’s a breakdown of what you might get at different budget levels in 2025/26:

   The size and layout of your venue can influence how far your budget goes. Bigger venues with more guests require bigger budgets.     Budget Ranges and What You’ll Get -

$3k – $5,000 -Essential décor only – basic table styling, minimal ceremony setup, simple lighting. $10k – $15,000 - A more polished look with upgraded centrepieces , ceremony arches, draping, mood lighting. $20k–$50,000 - Full room transformation with large floral installs, ceiling decor, luxe furniture, full venue styling, custom dance floors. $100,000+Luxury weddings — custom builds, premium florals, theatrical lighting, total wow factor styling.

There’s no one size fits all answer, but here’s how to decide:

  • If styling is a top priority, allocate 15-25% of your total budget to décor 
  • If it’s less important, stick to essentials and spend closer to 5-10%
  • Start with your end goal in mind and what do you want your guests to remember?


Remember: 

Decorating is just one part of your overall guest experience. The food, music, people, and vibe also shape your wedding memories. It is important to know that your wedding décor is what sets the scene and affects how you and your guests will feel. You and your guests might not always remember all the decor details or everything that happened on the night but you will remember the feelings you had.

When it comes to styling your wedding, these are the decorating budget traps many couples fall into:

  1. Underestimating labour and setup costs: Decorating takes time and muscle. Professional setup, delivery, and pack down fees add up, especially for large installs.
  2. Not asking your venue about restrictions: Some venues limit what can be hung, placed, or used (especially candles or hanging décor). Not checking early can mean costly last-minute changes.
  3. Overcommitting to DIY: DIY is cheaper up front but expensive in time and stress. Plus, rushed setups often under deliver on your vision.
  4. Choosing a style without pricing research: Luxe or high floral styles can cost more than rustic or minimalist ones. Lock in your wedding style/theme after you understand what it costs to bring it to life.
  5. Assuming fewer guests = smaller décor bill: Even small weddings often need the same core items – ceremony décor, signage, lighting, feature table décor. Guest count doesn’t always cut costs every time.


Avoiding these missteps can easily save you thousands and protect your sanity leading up to the big day.

One is those who just need to hire décor and have everything already figured out on where it will go.
 
The other type of client is those who want expert help pulling it all together and care about the overall wedding experience. Here’s how to know which one you are:

Option 1: You Already Know Exactly What You Want 

Hire Clients Only

If you’ve already made all the styling decisions, know exactly what décor items you want, how many, and are confident managing your venue logistics, you probably don’t need our wedding design service. You just need to hire the items and have our team deliver, set up, and pack them down. This is where you just need our wedding decorating service.

Here’s what a hire only client is responsible for: 

  • Choosing all products and quantities yourself from our hire range
  • Making sure everything fits within your venue’s layout and size
  • Providing a detailed floor plan showing where each item goes
  • Making sure all your items suit your venue’s rules e.g. no open flames, weight restrictions, anchoring limits, height restrictions etc
  • Organising and managing all communication with your venue
  • Confirming access times for delivery and pack down
  • Ensuring bump in/out is possible within the venue’s timeframes
  • Deciding on furniture and décor placement, spacing, and layout
  • Coordinating how all your hire items will work with any other suppliers e.g. florist, caterer, band, photo booth, etc.
  • Managing the overall look and making sure it all ties together
  • Taking responsibility for how everything looks and feels on the day


This option works well if you’re confident, hands on, and have a clear styling plan. But if even a few of those things feel overwhelming, you’re likely better suited to our design service.

Option 2: You Have Ideas, But Need Help Bringing it All Together

If you’ve got plenty of inspiration but no clear direction, or you don’t want the pressure of working out all the details on your own then you’ll benefit from our wedding design service.

This is perfect for couples who:

  • Have saved lots of images, but feel stuck translating it into a real plan
  • Don’t know what hire items are actually needed to create the look
  • Are unsure what will work in their venue or how much is too much or not enough
  • Don’t want to create floor plans or manage item placement themselves
  • Don’t want to liaise with the venue or solve logistics problems
  • Feel overwhelmed and just want someone to take it off their plate


With our wedding design service, we help you develop a clear vision, create the plan, choose the right items, and handle all the setup, layout, and styling on the day. We charge a design fee based on complexity and scope, but it saves you hours of stress and ensures your wedding actually feels like you.

We start with our Feel Good Formula, built around one essential question: “How do you want people to feel at your wedding?”

From there, we design everything to match that vision from mood, layout, lighting, styling, and party energy. It might mean creating a dramatic first impression, transforming a blank venue into something intimate, or designing a feature that becomes a talking point.

This approach allows us to build weddings that feel personal, purposeful, and completely unique. Whether that means creating a one-of-a-kind ceremony setup, or just ensuring your furniture, lighting, décor, and layout all work beautifully together.

At Feel Good Events, our design pricing is simple and transparent. We offer a base design fee of $990 (including GST), which covers everything needed to create your custom styling plan, including:

  • A 30-minute discovery call
  • Custom mood board and visual concept
  • Tailored layout or venue floor plan
  • Up to two design revisions
  • All venue communication and logistics
  • Full installation and pack down coordination


We call this the Feel Good Standard design fee which is the foundation that ensures your wedding looks and feels together, styled, and effortless.

Optional Design Service Add Ons

If your wedding requires extra work (like site visits, working with other wedding suppliers, or custom built decorations, we’ll quote these upfront. Some examples:

  • Site visits: $150 per visit
  • Coordination with external suppliers: $330 per supplier
  • Custom décor builds: Price on application
  • Extra design revisions: $110 per revision

What Will the Total Cost Be?

The total decorating investment depends on three main components:

  1. Design Fee (as above)
  2. Décor Hire – the products and styling elements used for your wedding.
  3. Delivery & Installation – professional setup, pack down, and transport


Most of our wedding design clients start at around $10,000 which includes the design fee, décor hire and installation.

Hiring items means you choose specific products from our hire website, and we deliver and set them up. Our full styling service includes design, mood boards, styling advice, and end to end decorating. This is perfect if you want a cohesive look without the stress.

Yes, we offer both artificial and fresh floral styling depending on your needs. We can create bridal tables, arbour arrangements, and more. We have our own in house florist so that you only need to deal with one wedding styling company in Melbourne

Definitely. You don’t need to have a plan. In our Discovery Session, we’ll guide you through questions about your vibe, venue, and preferences to help uncover a style that feels right for you.

We recommend booking our decorating services as early as possible to ensure availability. Ideally at least 2-3 months prior to your event date.
