You can get full information on the Australian Government Attorney-General's Dept website, including a full list of registered celebrants. In Australia you do not need a 'licence' to marry. You either visit the Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages in your state and complete a Notice of Intended Marriage (if you want a registry office marriage) or an Authorised Civil Celebrant will also help you with this. A lodgement fee will usually be charged at this point. The Notice must be lodged with your celebrant a minimum of one month prior to the ceremony taking place. For example, if your celebrant receives your Notice on 23 March you may marry on 23 April. You will need to provide your celebrant with evidence of date and place of birth, photo ID and the end of any previous marriages for each party (if applicable).

Well there are certain legal activities which have to take place....A notice of intended marriage has to be filled out, correctly, which is very important as all the information from this goes on to your Marriage Certificates. This has to be filled out not more that 18 months prior to your wedding, and no less than one month, before your wedding. This is signed by both of you, and witnessed by your celebrant, and lodged with your celebrant. Your celebrant would explain these details to you. Your Presentation Certificate, your Official Marriage certificate, the Declaration of No legal impediment are filled out by your celebrant from the correct information that you have given to your celebrant prior to the wedding...... The Official Marriage Certificate and the Presentation certificate are signed on the day of the wedding, and witnessed on that day......and the Declaration of no legal impediment is signed by yourselves prior to the wedding and then witnessed by your celebrant. Your celebrant will advise on these matters. I do hope this is helpful information. Regards, Sharen Pelly.

Registry style weddings or elopement style weddings can be catered for by any celebrant. All you need to do is contact the celebrant of your choice and he/she will be able to guide you with the relevant legal paperwork etc. I have a ceremony room within my home office and I have done many such weddings here where my couples have come after work on a weeknight!

Yes you do need forms that will need to be completed and lodged at least 1 month prior to your ceremony. So a meeting with you and your partner to identify and sight the relevant proof of identity (if previously married divorce certificate) as stated by my colleagues below and then date booked in and off we go!

I'll do it! :) Cheers Tania Broom

Wow, you are very organised getting this planned well in advance. Yes, you will need to fill out and sign some paperwork. Most Celebrant's these days will do this with you by gathering the details and entering it into their computer program, then print it out all nice and neat, ready for you to check, sign and be witnessed (by the Celebrant). This does have to be done no less than one calendar month prior to the date of the wedding and is called a Notice of Intention to Marry (NOIM). Usually, you will be required to pay a deposit at the time of signing, which comes off the total cost of the ceremony, and covers all work done up to the time of signing. Closer to the day, you will be required to check through your Official Marriage Certificate, and read and sign the Statuary Declarations on the back, witnessed and explained to you by your Celebrant. The balance for the ceremony is paid at this time. You can be married anywhere, anytime, any day as long as all the legal requirements are met, and at a place agreed upon by both the couple and the Celebrant. You may want to be married at your home, or even the home of the Celebrant. I have married many couples in my garden. Many Celebrants, offer "packages" with different inclusions, depending on your requirements. Some want all the bells and whistles, some don't. So don't be afraid to ask! Good luck.

Honestly there is almost as much work for me as a wedding celebrant in a wedding which is 'just sign the paperwork' as a full ceremony

Hi there. You will need to meet with a celebrant at least one month prior to the marriage. You will need to fill in a Notice of Intent to Marry. You will need either current passports, original birth certificates and evidence of dissolution of prior marriages ( if applicable), in order to do this. You will need two witnesses ( over 18years of age) . I do have short ceremony package for this purpose and will completete and submit all the paperwork . The ceremony can take place anywhere.

Of course, you can have just that. You will need a celebrant to organise the completion of your NOTICE OF INTENTION TO MARRY minimum one month prior to your chosen wedding date. Then you will need the same celebrant to present the actual legal ceremony required by Law. After that the three certificates will be signed by yourselves and two witnesses over the age of 18. Your celebrant will do all the arrangement you need for this to happen. Or you and your fiancée will need is to provide the Celebrant with documents of you Identification. There will be a fee from your celebrant of choice.

You will need to select a celebrant and then be guided by your celebrant. Celebrants can perform a simple ceremony for the bride and groom and two witnesses who need to be over 18 years old. At the meeting with the celebrant, you need to bring either a passport with current photo or a birth certificate and current photo ID card such as a drivers licence. Also if you have been previously married, then divorce papers or a death certificate need to be sighted by the celebrant. The the Notice of Intented Marriage must be completed, signed and witnessed and be in the celebrant's hands no shorter than 1 calendar month before the wedding. The Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage must be completed and signed as close as possible to the wedding day. I am happy to answer any more of your questions. Best wishes.

Hi, a bit late I know, yes you still need to fill in some legal docs and you need to provide the celebrant with identification. Simple weddings can be very special as well as the more lavish ones.

There is a list of authorised celebrants on the Attorney General's website - the person you choose will help you complete your Notice of Intended Marriage.

The time-frame for lodging it is between one and eighteen months of the wedding, and you need to provide original copies of your proof of identity documents.

Celebrants vary in training, expertise, fees, style and personality but regardless of who you choose, that person will put in quite a bit of time and effort helping you on the day... it might look and be simple but there's quite a bit of work behind the scenes!
