How early can I file my marriage documents?

Should begin ASAP or does it not matter as long as it's a month prior to the wedding?

Hi Mariana,

You are required to lodge your NOTICE OF INTENTION TO MARRY   aka your "NOIM" no more than 18 months before your wedding date and no less than one month.

After your wedding, you will be able to apply to the relevant authority in your state for your original marriage certificate.  This can vary time wise, but usually about six weeks after your wedding. You can apply on line, in person via the phone.  I put the relevant form for this application in my couples celebration folder which I give them on completion of the wedding.   You can speed up this process - for a fee - when you need the certificate quickly ( for application of visa's etc).

Your celebrant will explain all these details to you.  Good luck with everything.

Hi Mariana. You should lodge your Notice of Intended Marriage with your Celebrant no more than 18 months prior to your Ceremony, and no less than 1 month. The Certificates you sign on your wedding day must be lodged with the relevant State Department of Births Deaths and Marriages (BDM) within 14 days of your Ceremony. This is done by your Marriage Celebrant. You can then apply to the (BDM) for your Official Certificate of Marriage which you will need when changing your name.... if your so doing... on your Passport, Drivers Licence, Bank details etc. Hope this answers your question, Regards, Sharen Pelly.

As your marriage is on the 3 February 2018, you can lodge the NOIM form anytime from now until 2nd Jan 2018. No rush. It's not worth getting a shortening of time if you go after the 3rd Jan. Good luck Mariana.

Hi Mariana, congratulations on your engagement! I would recommend getting your paperwork in order as soon as is viable for you. You will have many things regarding the planning and preparation of your wedding which will come up very quickly and the less you have on your plate the better. This is one thing you can get out of the way early on without worrying about a last minute rush. As per the legislation and specifically the Marriage Act 1961 you must lodge your "NOIM" no less than one month prior and no more than 18 months prior. Please see below an excerpt from the act relevant to your question.

"The NOIM must be given to the authorised celebrant no earlier than 18 months and no later than one month before the date of the marriage.22 A notice expires after 18 months, and a marriage may not be solemnised if the NOIM was received more than 18 months before the date of the proposed marriage. Parties are encouraged to produce their evidence of date and place of birth as well as evidence of identity and the end of any previous marriage (if relevant) at the time of lodging the NOIM. However, this document may be produced at any time before the marriage is solemnised. For the purposes of complying with the timeframes required for lodging the NOIM it is sufficient for an authorised celebrant to sight scanned (emailed) or faxed copies of the documents at the time of lodgement of the NOIM, provided the originals are sighted by the authorised celebrant before the marriage is solemnised."

All the best with your ceremony and wedding festivities! :)

Hi Mariana,

It does not matter as long as it's a month prior to the wedding,

If you are getting married on 03/02/2018, you are able to lodge your Notice of Intended Marriage immediately, then it's out of the way and not forgotten. The legal requirement is not more than 18 months prior to the wedding date.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Best wishes,

Deborah - Sweet Ceremonies

Hi Mariana

I recommend ASAP as you never know what pops up and you may need to marry early. Life is good at throwing curve balls.

You can also, transfer the NOIM to another celebrant if things sour with your current option.

The early bird gets the worm

Take care
