Expert Advice

As a wedding professional, Kerrie Boag Celebrant offers expert advice to help couples plan their perfect day. Ask a question or read their expert advice.

Does the bride go on the Honeymoon with her maiden or married name?

When travelling abroard for your honeymoon, your passport will still be in your maiden name, therefore, book your tickets etc in your maiden name.  Once you return home, your documents will have been lodged with the Birth, Dealths and Marriages and you will be able to change your name, if that is your wish.

As far as any non legal documentation, or how you wish to be called, is completely up to you.

Who can be our witnesses if we don't know anyone in Australia?

Anyone over the age of 18 can be witness to your marriage.  You don't need to personally know them.  Your Celebrant can usually organise a couple of witness's for you.  Nothing to worry about.

Good luck.

Getting married in Australia with Work & Holiday Visa (462)?

Hi All, we are going to spend a year in Australia with my boyfriend, having a Work&Holiday Visa (462). We are engaged, and plan to get married in Australia. Is it necessary with this type of visa? Thanks a lot for your kind answer!

Exciting times ahead for you and your boyfriend.  Travelling and getting married.  Congratulations.

The only requirement necessary for you to marry in Australia is that you both complete a Notice of Intent to marry, no less than one month prior to your intended marry date.

You will also need to prove your identity and birth details via Birth Certificate or Passport and Photographic ID if using your Birth Certificate.  If any of these documents are not in English, you will need them to be translated by an authorative.  If in Australia, this can be done via NAATI.

Before you get married, you will also need to complete a Declaration of no legal Impedement.

If you have been married previously, you will need proof that the marriage has been disolved.  You will also need two witnesses that are over 18 years plus, on the actual wedding day, where there will be further signing of your marriage Certificates.

If you require any further help, don't hesitate to reach out.

Where can I get a notice of intended marriage form?

Is this something that I have to find myself?

Hi there,

You can download a Notice of Intent to Marry Document from the Attorney Generals Department or your chosen Celebrant can provide this for you.

What does marriage celebrant do?

A Marriage Celebrant has a very important Job.

Firstly, The MC must be registered, competent and up to date with all the regulations and Law, so that the correct documents can be completed and your marriage to be legal.

The MC should be creative and professional in obtaining information about your personal journey, writing that story and then articulating it to your friends and loved ones on your chosen date.

It is wise to meet with your Celebrant and see if you feel comfortable and relaxed with them.

A good Celebrant should spend at least 10 hours on your wedding ceremony from start to finish.

Can anyone be a marriage celebrant?

Answer to your question is No.

This being, once you have completed your Certificate 1V you then need to apply with the Attorney General Department.  You must prove that you are a good citizen of clean character and that you do much for your community.  This must be backed up by three character references.  There is also an examination that you must sit with the Attorney General Department.

It is quite a rigorous process but worth it, if you are passionate enough to jump through the hoops.

What makes a good marriage celebrant?

A good Marriage Celebrant, should take the time to get to know you and your partner and your journey.  They should be competent with the regulations and laws and have plenty of resources and ideas to put forward to you.

Mostly, they should be able to listen to you and what you want in your special day.  Flexibility, warmth, empathy and sincerity is a must, in my opinion.

How do I ensure my vows sound good enough?

It is important to remember that you and you partner are the focus of the marriage.  Its not about how good your vows are, its about how meaningfull they are to you and your partner.  Your Celebrant is always helpful in that area, so dont be affraid to ask for guidance.

Does the celebrant have to do the whole "how they met" story?

I feel like that might be awkward for us. We are a super stong and stable couple now, but when we met we still had a lot of growing up to do (we were teenagers, and broke each others hearts.) We had a huge falling out and reconnected later. It was very messy and all of our fam and friends know that. Do we have to go into that when our life is so beautiful NOW, and has been for years now?

There are Legal obligations that a celebrant must include in your ceremony, but your story is not one of them.  We can include as little or as much as you wish.  It is important to rmember that you and your partner are the fous of the marriage.

How can I incorporate my step-child into the ceremony?

Including your stepchild in your wedding is a wonderful way to start a blended family and there are many ways of doing so.

You could keep it nice and simple by including them as a flower girl, ring bearer, best man, reading a poem etc or you could make it really special by saying vows to each other.

In a similar way to your marriage vows but to your stepchild.  for example

vowing to respect his/her relationship with his/her parents, yet be aware of the important place in his/her life and treat him/her with interest, care, concern, fairness and respect.

It a beautiful way of validating the child and his/her fears.  Very endearing indeed.
