What does a marriage celebrant have to say?

What are the legal requirements?

Milestone Moments - Deirdre Fennessy

In a Marriage Ceremony a Celebrant must use the full legal names of the couple somewhere during the ceremony which is to do with identity of the two parties.  I like to do this right near the beginning.  The celebrant must introduce themselves and state that they are a registered celebrant and that it is a marriage ceremony taking place.  The "Monitum" must be said before the vows and there are specific words for the vows that must be used to make the marriage legal that include atleast one of the legal given names of the each of the couple.  The couple need to be announced as married by the celebrant by the authority vested in them by the Attorney General of Australia.  For the rest of the ceremony the  couple can choose the wording and can use a nickname that they are known by.

Is it bad to have my guests sitting in the sun?

What if it's really hot? It's a feb wedding. What can I do to ensure no one faints? :/

Milestone Moments - Deirdre Fennessy

Hi there.  It sounds from your question that you already have your venue planned as an outside wedding and there is no shade.  If it turns out to be really hot, some options could be to have a cold water stand and plastic cups available so that your guests can get a drink if they don't have one.  Also to have a collection of umbrellas available so your guests can use them for shade.  If the heat is so bad you could go for your plan B that was to be your go to place for wet weather that may give your guests a more comfortable location.  If you go ahead with the outside location, my suggestion would be to not be fashionably late, but nicely on time so that your guests aren't kept waiting in the heat.  Let's hope you have good weather.

Is it possible to get married at the registry and then have a wedding later?

Milestone Moments - Deirdre Fennessy

You can get married at the registry office with just a few guests and later on have a celebration with a larger group of guests but it can't be called a legal wedding but would be a renewal of vows ceremony.  A celebrant can perform this ceremony and make it a special celebration for you but it would need to be made clear at the beginning of the ceremony that it is a celebration of what took place a few weeks/months ago when the couple were married.

What do you need to have a wedding?

My partner, myself, two witnesses.... what else?

Milestone Moments - Deirdre Fennessy

For a wedding to be a legal marriage, you need to be over 18 years (one can be 16-17, but need a court order and parental permission), have an Authorised Celebrant who says the necessary legal words and the couple say the necessary legal vows, two witnesses who are over 18 years to witness the ceremony and the signing of the marriage documents. The celebrant needs to then declare the couple husband and wife. One month prior to the ceremony, the couple need to have completed the Notice of Intended Marriage with the celebrant, sign it and have it witnessed by them.  The ceremony can have extra parts added to personalize the ceremony for the couple.

My partner won't be wearing a wedding ring. Does this make the "ring exchange" part of the ceremony seem awkward?

Hello, My partner won't be wearing a wedding ring. Does this make the "ring exchange" part of the ceremony seem awkward?

Milestone Moments - Deirdre Fennessy

A ring exchange is the giving and receiving of a ring so there is no awkwardness if there is only one ring.  The wording can be written for the groom to say a few words of the meaning of the giving of the ring to the bride who can then respond with a few words of reply of what it means for them to receive it and the symbolism of them wearing it.
