About

I originally became a Marriage Celebrant in order to officiate at my eldest son's wedding, then decided that it was something I would like to do after retiring from 40 years in the Tasmanian State Service. My previous areas of expertise are communications, marketing, education, engagement, facilitation, events and experiences - all very relevant to this role. I enjoy getting to know people and helping them to begin their life together.

FAQ

I have two levels of service available:

  • A full marriage ceremony
  • A registry-style or "elopement" ceremony

FULL MARRIAGE CEREMONY (LARGE OR SMALL) $650

A full ceremony package may include any/all of the following:

  • Planning meeting and preparation of pre-wedding paperwork,
  • unlimited email and phone communication,
  • preparation of ceremony script based on your story for you to review and approve,
  • audio equipment,
  • signing table,
  • run-through/practice (additional travel fee may apply),
  • conducting the marriage ceremony,
  • solemnising the marriage,
  • provision of certificates and
  • submission of final paperwork.

The ceremony itself will be designed to meet your wishes, and may include family, friends and guests, music, readings, family or cultural traditions, personal statements/vows and more.

Venue is also flexible - indoor or outdoor.

My audio equipment is high quality and self-contained and easily transportable, and does not require an electricity supply - so in a forest, at the beach, in a vineyard, in a park, in a garden, in a local hall or any indoor venue - you choose.

REGISTRY-STYLE ("ELOPEMENT") CEREMONY $450

A Registry style marriage ceremony involves you, your partner and your two witnesses. You will still need to complete the official paperwork, one month before, and following the ceremony. Location is flexible. There is a suitable location, with a water view, at my office in Lewisham if you like (no additional charge).

  • personal statements to one another.

No audio equipment is provided.

I am happy to take a few photos for you after the ceremony.

ALL CEREMONIES

A $200 non-refundable booking fee is payable at first meeting (included in total fee). Includes first planning meeting, along with the completion and receipt of the Notice of Intending Marriage and other required paperwork.

Travel to the ceremony and rehearsal (if applicable) beyond 80km (return) - $1 per km. I am willing to travel to anywhere in Tasmania to conduct the ceremony for you. If you are a long way from Southern Tasmania, we can undertake the ceremony planning on line and by phone to minimise travel costs.

If , due to the timing and location of the event, it is necessary for me to stay overnight, I will charge actual costs for the accommodation plus 50%.

I have an office at Lewisham and you are welcome to join me there for planning meetings, if more convenient for you.

Final payment of the remainder is required 14 days before the ceremony.

Cancellation and refund details are available www.andrewsmithlifeevents.com/serviceagreement

Some venues are equipped with audio gear. Check with the venue and let me know, or  let me know your contact at the venue and I will check with them.

However, I do have my own high quality audio system, which is cordless and blue-tooth. The speaker is suitable for groups up to 80, understanding that some outside venues may reduce this if there is a lot of wind about. The microphone is cordless, and blue-tooth connects to the speaker.  This means there are no clumsy cords and leads getting in the way. The whole system is very portable and so I can set it up anywhere, regardless of  power availability.

If you are having a Master of Ceremonies for the evening after the marriage ceremony you will need to make sure that they have their own PA system, or the venue system is available for them, as I am unable to leave mine with you.

(I am available as a Master of Ceremonies, charged at an hourly rate).

Where can I get a notice of intended marriage form?

Is this something that I have to find myself?

Andrew Smith Life Events

The best place to get a copy of the NOIM is through your chosen marriage celebrant. they will provide you with a copy.  Its usual to complete the NOIM at tyour first meeting when you will need to present your photo ID and proof of age. You will need to complete this with your celebrant at least one calendar month before your planned wedding date.

can a marriage celebrant marry a family member?

I went to a wedding and the celebrant was the grooms father. Is this legal?

Andrew Smith Life Events

Yes it is not only legal and acceptable, but also a great experience. There is noone better to work with to tell your story during your ceremony, and there can be no doubt your marriage is supported wholeheartedly by your parent (or sibling). I was inspired to do the training and get the qualifications in order to officiate at my son's wedding. I have heard a number of similar stories from other celebrants.

Why do married couples renew their vows?

Andrew Smith Life Events

Renewal of vows, publically, is a very powerful statement of continuing love between two people who have been together through all the changes and challenges that marriage, family, work, brings over a number of years. When the relationship remains good, the love is still strong, its worth acknowledging that. I recently did a surprise vow renewal (risky business you might think) organised by the husband on his wife's 50th birthday. They were very busy people, doing a lot of good work for other people. The husband said the relationship had just got better and better over the years and he wanted to do something that focussed on them as a couple. It went down a treat, such a great celebration, so many smiles.
