The Funny Celebrant - Vanessa Ballard

In my 20s and 30s I went to so many weddings that I felt like a professional wedding guest!  During this time I was struck by something surprising - all the ceremonies were really stuffy! It was weird because my friends were fun, easy-going people - yet they'd have these totally formal and impersonal ceremonies that didn't reflect them at all. And, as their friend I was forced to sit through these ceremonies and would count down the minutes until they were over and I could get a drink!

I just didn't get it. It's meant to be the happiest day of your life - why didn't these ceremonies reflect this?!  That's when I came up with the idea of becoming a celebrant - I was determined to offer an alternative.

To date I have conducted over 150 weddings, and they have all been fun, engaging and totally personal - I make sure of it.  With a background in stand up comedy and television script writing, I write a touch of comedy into every ceremony - not too much - just enough to make sure everyone has a good time.

After conducting a ceremony I often have guests come up to me and gush. Usually they're taken aback - they didn't know that a marriage ceremony could be something they might enjoy! It makes me smile from ear to ear.
