Shirley and I were married on Saturday 6 March 2010. David Schneider was our wedding celebrant. We found him online, one among the millions. We rang a few celebrants and held preliminary conversations – but David was the one we liked the most: he was enthusiastic; straight-forward; competitively priced; and he listened. Really listened. We had a pretty good idea of what we wanted for our ceremony but, in retrospect, there were lots of things we hadn’t considered. That’s where David helped. He came loaded with ready-made lists and reading materials to help flesh-out the ceremony of our choosing. We wanted something quite traditional. David talked us through the possibilities, and together we crafted a ceremony to our taste. This took a few drafts – Shirley and I kept adding to the “script” – but each revision was handled by David without additional charge. He brought together each element of our preferred ceremony with great enthusiasm and attention to detail. Among the 50 million things you have to do in the lead up to a wedding, it was a great relief to feel that we could set aside any concerns about the ceremony itself. We found David to be competent and calm; we just had to show up and say “I do”. One last thing: Saturday 6 March 2010 was the day of Melbourne’s “storm of the century”. More rain and hail fell on Melbourne in that one afternoon than the city had seen in the previous decade – and ours was to be an outdoor wedding in the Williamstown Botanic Gardens! The potential for chaos and stress was huge. At the last crazy minute we had to ditch our plans for an outdoor wedding, inform our guests accordingly, negotiate flooded streets, and assemble at our local pub. David took it in his stride. He helped to calm and settle our guests. And then he married Shirley and me, underneath the “specials board”, to the cheers of family and friends.

We booked the dining room at the back of the restaurant, over-looking the beach: glad we did; a great venue.
