For Vietamese bride Quang Bui and Mauritian groom Peter Clarisse, their fusion wedding in Sydney on November 30, 2013 was as much about their love for others than it was about their own.
To honour their respective cultures, there was so much to pack into one day. A Catholic church service at the request of Peter’s parents. A Vietnamese tea ceremony and Asian banquet requested by Quang’s. A guest list of 450. All the while, trying to make it as personal and unique to them as possible, and on a budget.
Quang says, “As a bride… you always imagined exactly what you wanted, and to not be able to do it all on your own is extremely hard. But if I had to change anything from the day I would not! It was absolutely perfect with the mix of culture and filled with so much love and laughter.”
The 26-year-olds’ passion for basketball was the one quirky ingredient they brought to the day that made it uniquely theirs. Laser cut invitations of the pair shooting hoops. Personalised crystal basketball favours. Handmade place cards in the shape of basketball jerseys. And a fun photo shoot centre-court starring their beloved Jordan 1s.
“Our wedding was significant not because of who we are but of who we are surrounded by,” reflects Quang. “It’s all about our families and friends – they made this day the best wedding by far.”
Quang explains, “A tea ceremony represents the offering and receiving of the bride from one family to another. The groom’s family, back in the day, would walk to the bride’s house bearing trays of gifts. Nowadays they just walk from the end of the street.”
“The tea ceremony was quite an emotional moment between me and my parents,” says Quang. “It was so beautiful to be able to give our families the time to give their words of love and advice.”
Quang wore three gowns on her wedding day. A traditional Vietnamese dress, ‘Ao Dai’, for the tea ceremony, a voluminous Oscar De La Renta gown for the St Mary’s Cathedral nuptials and a Vera Wang White design for the banquet reception at Rhodes Phoenix.
“I must say, playing basketball in this [dress] was quite a challenge!” laughs Quang.
By Black Star Pastry, Quang and Peter’s four-tier wedding cake was an unusual flavour: strawberry-watermelon.
