Linda and Gabriel’s ‘big fat’ Greek-Cambodian wedding

Wedding: 11/11/2017

Cultures collided to create Linda and Gabriel’s two-day Greek-Cambodian wedding.

As bride Linda, 28, explains, both she and Gabriel, 38, had come from very traditional families. “Gabriel’s parents are originally from a small island in Greece and my parents are originally from a small village in Cambodia,” Linda says.

“We hold our family values very close to our hearts and both value our traditions and decided to incorporate both cultures in our extravagant and unique two-day Cambodian and Greek wedding.”

The Adelaide couple’s celebrations began on Friday, November 10, 2017, with a traditional Cambodian ceremony held at the bride’s parent’s home. “The day consisted of six traditional Cambodian costumes to change into throughout the day and six different ceremonies to take part in,” Linda explains.

The next day captured the Greek traditions with a ceremony at the Nativity of Christ Greek Orthodox Christian Church at Port Adelaide in front of a whopping 500 guests.

The reception was then held at Festival Function Centre.

“We had a Greek/English DJ and of course a traditional Cambodian band who flew over from Cambodia,” Linda says.

“The night was filled with traditional Cambodian and Greek dancing, the best part was seeing both cultures celebrating and dancing.

“We held our ‘big fat Greek-Cambodian wedding over two glorious days and we were very fortunate to be able to share it with family who flew from all around the world.”

Linda explains, “Each costume and ceremony had its own individual story behind them. An important custom for Cambodians is the involvement of elders and the community. The day was ended with a final blessing from six local Cambodian monks who traditionally bless newlyweds with happiness and fortune for the future.”

“Many couples with our cultural background tend to skip all the long wedding traditions due to the intensity of the traditions but we were willing to incorporate as much tradition from both our cultures as possible,” Linda says.
