When I was planning my wedding, our rings were the easiest thing to do. As a jeweller, I knew exactly what makes a high quality ring. But it’s not easy for most couples. There are questions about materials and quality, and endless shopping weekends comparing “apples with oranges”. Forget that! Romance is not dead! Ancient Egyptians used to think there was a vein that ran straight from the heart to the ring finger on the left hand so couples in love would wear rings on that finger to let others know that they were coupled up- how romantic!
We've taken that as a tradition in our Western culture which is why we're doing it now.
But as with all traditions, there are always variations. In some North European and Indian cultures, the wedding ring is worn on the right hand.

Can wedding rings be made smaller?

Yes and no. It really depends on what your ring is made from, and where/how gemstones are set.
Gold, platinum and silver rings can almost always be made smaller. Things that might make sizing impossible are gems/diamonds set all the way around or if any settings are too delicate to withstand being shaped into a smaller size. Classic bands with no stones are easy to make smaller (or bigger!). The only time when in might be tricky is if there was a pattern going all the way around.
Most of the modern metal rings can’t be sized at all so you would need to buy a new ring insteaad. These include titanium, zirconium, tungsten, ceramic and steel.
When you’re wedding ring shopping, make sure you ask if the design and material you love is suitable for re-sizing.

Help! What can I do if my rings are damaging each other?

Oh no! Wihout seeing them and as general advice, you have a couple of options:
1) Have them soldered together. This reduces the wear to zero. It is permanent in the sense that you can't separate them yourself but if you ever need them separated, your jeweller can separate them. Just be sure to let them know that you want this as an option before they are attached.
2) Wear a very fine band inbetween your rings. This will act as spacer and reduce the surface area that is being worn ony our actual rings. The wearing will only happen where the spacer and your rings touch so if the band is thin and narrow, it will be reduced.
In the meantime, have your local jeweller have a look at your rings make sure that the wear is not causing any structural issues and they are okay to keep wearing them.
