How many weddings do you book in per day?

Are celebrants usually doing one per day? or two on some days? How is this possible?! haha

Miriam McDonald Marriage Celebrant

Hi, thanks for your question.

In days gone past when there were only a very limited number of celebrants allowed to practice in each town, weddings were booked back to back and did not allow for any time inbetween, if you were running late it was too bad!  The Celebrant would go on to the next wedding and you missed out!   It is hard to imagine that now!

As a Celebrant I like to devote my time on the day to one couple's special event, that way if for instance the weather changes and they need to change the time, I am able to be flexible and available for them.  As we do often establish a lovely relationship during the course of planning the special day, I really look forward to being there and celebrating the day with them!  I like to stay after the ceremony to play music while the photos are being taken to keep the atmosphere (if that is what they wish) so I don't like to rush off.

I have on special dates such as Easter, Christmas Eve or New Year's Day been asked to book more than one wedding on a day, I do make an exception for these dates to try to accommodate everyone, but would only do it if it worked out that couples wanted either a morning or evening wedding.

cheers

Miriam

Any advice on writing my vows to my wife-to-be?

Miriam McDonald Marriage Celebrant

Hi Nathan,

I think it is beautiful that you are wanting to write your own vows :)  I know from experience that personalised vows from the heart make for an extra special ceremony!  As far as content, I would suggest having a notebook where you can jot down your thoughts on what makes your wife-to-be the most special person in your life, any little things that come to you during the day, then closer to the ceremony you can look at your list and see which things you feel you would love to express the most.  Your celebrant can help you with putting them together into a 'vow like' structure.... I usually prepare a little palm card for my couples just in case nerves set in and memories go blank!

Good Luck and I am sure you will do an amazing job.

have you ever said no to doing a couple's wedding?

Miriam McDonald Marriage Celebrant

The only time I have had to say no was to a couple who wanted to marry at midnight during a New Year's Eve party... my reason for declining was that by law a Marriage Celebrant cannot solomnise a marriage if either party  to the marriage are under the influence of alcohol or other substances, as this may impair their ability to legitimately give consent to the marriage, and it would not be possible under these circumstances to ascertain that this was not the case.    I offered to marry them in the afternoon prior to the party or the next day.
