OVERVIEW

“Creating the perfect ceremony today that will still wow your heart tomorrow.”

As a fully registered marriage celebrant, I enjoy utilising my organisation skills, a love of public speaking, and writing about people's love journeys.

I really didn't just want to be another cookie cutter marriage celebrant so if you are looking for fun, fresh and interesting then your search is over. Need further assurance? Check out the video made by upcoming comediennes, Jenna Owen and Victoria Zerbst. The interview can be watched by clicking video in the menu bar above.

I'm happy to consider travelling to any venue in Australia and travel costs can be provided upon application. All venues within one hour of Sydney CBD however are included in my basic fee. For further information, including a full list of inclusions and cost packages available please visit my website http://www.loveandunderstanding.com.au

If you choose me, I promise you will look back fondly and remember how your celebrant not only presented a beautiful ceremony but also genuinely cared as much about your big day as you did yourself.

About

Following a forty-year career as an award-winning graphic designer and photographer, I decided it was time to do something different. It was my daughter, Alice, who suggested I should become a marriage celebrant adding "...Dad you would be so good at that". Always one to pay attention to the women in my life, but slightly sceptical this could be just a ploy to save the cost of a celebrant at her own wedding, I looked into it. She was right as always – I'm absolutely loving it!

FAQ

Please give me a call right now (assuming it's not gone 9.00pm) or send me an email so we can get the ball rolling. This is completely obligation free and allows us to confirm a few things such as whether I’m available on your proposed wedding date and to discuss arranging a face-to-face meeting. Don't worry if you don’t have an exact date for the wedding yet, that’s absolutely okay. What's important is we start talking.

Great question! I have no desire to over complicatre things so I've distilled the process down into four simple steps.

Step 1. Meet

Ideally this is face-to-face, but can be done by Facetime if required. At this first meeting we discuss your wants and desires for your ceremony and I explain the relevant legal processes required. Hopefully you will agree that I am definitely the celebrant for you and book my service so we can lock off your wedding date. I can then give you my wedding pack full of useful information to assist you further with your planning. Up to this point it is totally obligation free and no cost will have been incurred on your part if you choose not to proceed further.

Step 2. Create

We then meet again (Deluxe package only) where we complete the legal paperwork and discuss in more detail your ceremony, any rituals, personal vows or readings you may want to include. You will bring back the completed questionaire I gave you at the first meeting together with legal documents to allow us to begin filling in the Notice of Intended Marriage Form. Following this meeting I then start writing and creating your unique, personalised ceremony script. Once finished, I send this to you for review and comment.

Step 3. Marriage

I arrive at the place of marriage at least one hour prior to your ceremony, to set-up, liaise with the photographer, any performers, people doing the readings and generally mingle with your guests. Then the fun part begins... With the aid of a high-quality PA system and cordless microphones, I conduct your memorable marriage ceremony, making sure it is full of laughter, happiness and wonderful memories that you will treasure always.

Step 4. Post marriage

You go off on a well-deserved honeymoon while I complete all the legal paperwork and register your marriage online with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. I also submit your application for the official Certificate of Marriage (your legal wedding certificate) which if choosing the Deluxe package is done with no additional fee from me just the Government charge of $56.

We may discuss whether you want your ceremony to have a religious or non-religious feel. Do you want it to be formal, semi-formal or totally laid-back? Perhaps you’re actually considering an exciting themed wedding! I’m really open to anything. What’s important to me is it’s your day and I want to be able to give you exactly what you want. There’s no charge for the first meeting and totally obligation free.

Nothing is required to be brought to the first meeting but if you wish to you certainly can bring the following things that will be needed at the second meeting. In order to complete the Notice of Intended Marriage form you will need: your driving licenses, birth certificates and passports. I will need to sight the originals or official certified copies as photocopies are not acceptable. If either of you have been married before, then I would also need to sight your official divorce document or the original death certificate. Again, preferably originals but can be official certified copies. I will discuss what of these documents you have at the first meeting so don't worry if you don't think you are able to provide some of them.

I’m there to assist you every step of the way and can be consulted any time. I completely understand that while some people might have a clear and defined idea of exactly what they want, others may not be so sure and need help. Whatever stage you have reached, I can work with you to allay any fears, polish your ideas and give you the confidence that you will have the most magical day possible.

By law this appointment must be at least one month before the wedding for the completion and signing of the Notice of Intended Marriage. However, if this is not possible, you may be elegible to apply to a prescribed authority such as your local court or the Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages, for a shortening of time. I can advise more about this if required.

A civil marriage celebrant is someone who is registered by the federal Attorney General's department to conduct legal marriages according to the Marriage Act 1961. Celebrants are regulated by but not employed by the Attorney General’s Department. As a registered celebrant I am authorised to formalise marriages according to the law in Australia. I ensure all legal marriage documentation is prepared correctly and provide information and guidance to you and your partner about the marriage ceremony. As well as delivering the marriage ceremony, I write the script and complete all the required paperwork.

Absolutely not! Marriage celebrants all have varying degrees of ability and commitment. Some have been chruning out weddings for years and yes may have the runs on the board, but that can sometimes bring boredom and cynicism. I may have not have the numbers, but what I can provide is a lot more enthusiasm and a real passion to make your ceremony one you and your guests will remember for ever. Celebrants like me invest a lot of time and skill into achieving a great presentation. The average wedding can require 12 hours or more.

Stephen is an incredible marriage celebrant. From the day we met him, it was a no brainer for us to choose him to be our celebrant. He is genuine, passionate and warm. Made the process incredibly easy. We received so many positive comments from our guests about Stephen and even though it has been 2 months since our wedding, whenever we speak about the wedding, our friends still points out how great our celebrant was. I truly highly recommend Stephen. Thank you Stephen!!!

Stephen drove down to Bowral for our wedding. We met up with him a couple of times, and he wanted to have a personal relationship with us so that he could truly represent that in the wedding. He has strong family values, which ties into why he's a celebrant as he truly understands the sanctity of marriage.

Eloping without witnesses?

My partner and I are thinking of eloping but just with our children and no witnesses. Is this possible?

Love and understanding

You must have two witnesses both over 18 but they don't have to be known to you. Registry offices can supply witnesses if required. Personally though I think you may regret such a marriage. While your personal reasons for eloping are none of my business, I do feel duty bound to suggest if a huge wedding is not for you (for whatever reason) then by all means choose a 'simple' low-key ceremony with a few friends and very close family – this can be so much nicer than eloping. I offer a budget package for just this reason which is actiually less than the cost of  a registry office. Consider your own garden for example or a local park or if you want to go somewhere, that's fine have a distance marriage but do employ a celebrant and invite a few select people to make it a more romantic than a dull formalaic registry office affair.
