About

I started out life as a child, as we all did, and often I think that I have never really grown up. I love meeting new people and working with them to create memorable events. My other lives have seen me as a teacher, live performer, Master of Ceremonies, event manager, sales and marketing manager and now a Commonwealth-registered marriage celebrant. When I blend all of those chapters together, I feel that I have lived a vibrant, fun life and here I am now with you.

FAQ

If you were born in Australia, you must provide an official birth certificate or an official extract from an official register (ie, not a copy. You can obtain an official birth certificate from the Office of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the State or Territory in which you were born.

If you were born overseas, you must produce a valid passport or birth certificate issued by the government of an overseas country, showing the date and place of your birth.

It is also advisable that you both bring along another form of identification, and the most suitable form of photo ID is your current driver’s licence.

If either of you has been married before, I will need to see evidence of how your most recent marriage ended. If you are a widow or widower, an original or certified copy of the Death Certificate of your spouse must be presented. In the case of divorce, I must see the Decree Absolute or Certificate of Divorce of your most recent marriage.

You should be aware that, under Australian law, I am not permitted to perform your marriage until I have sighted your original documents.

If you decide to engage me as your celebrant, we will need to complete a “Notice of Intended Marriage” form, otherwise referred to as a NOIM, together at a meeting.

It is a four-page official form that you complete with your celebrant and it requires you both, as the bride and groom, to give personal details and states your intention to enter into marriage. This form is sent to the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages after your marriage and the Registrar will use the information in the form to register your marriage.

You must complete the ‘Notice of Intended Marriage’ form no earlier than 18 months before your proposed wedding date and no later than one month and one day before the date of marriage. A shortening of time may be granted, under exceptional circumstances, but it is not automatic.

Most definitely, I can assist you with these and, on the day, we will have them prepared on a small laminated card for you to read from (good idea, particularly if you are nervous)

I can also provide you with a collection of sample vows, reading and rituals that you may wish to look at and discuss.

You are more than welcome to create your own vows entirely - remember, it is your day, and we do it your way.

The average time is 20-30 minutes but this may vary depending on how many readings/poems etc. you include.

Of course you can, music is a very strong, emotional “painter of the theme” for your day, and strongly encourage you to have music, either live or pre-recorded included in your special ceremony.

I am happy to assist you with music selections and I would suggest that you choose one piece for the processional or Bride’s entrance, one or two pieces to be played during the signing of the wedding certificates and a further piece for the celebration or recessional part of the ceremony.

How many weddings do you book in per day?

Are celebrants usually doing one per day? or two on some days? How is this possible?! haha

Michael Pratt Celebrant

HI there

I book the same number of weddings per day, as a celebrant, that you do, as a bride.

This is just my personal opinion here and I respect that other celebrants may choose to differ.

I plan to devote all of my energies to my bride and groom to ensure that their day goes their way.

I try to manage all that is in my power, but cannot control the unexpected things like weather, traffic, people (including bridal party) running late, power outages and the like and all of these can have a major affect on the timing of a ceremony. Because of these (uncontrollable, but hopefully manageable) events, I wont' "double up" with a second wedding on a single day so as not to cause additional stresses to all involved.

Of course, if it is a mid morning ceremnoy followed by one later in the evening....well..ummm.....still probably not

Can you go without a rehearsal with bridal party?

Is a runsheet enough to coordinate everyone on the big day or are rehearsals necessary? If so what is the best approach for this?

Michael Pratt Celebrant

Hi Julia

In the same way that you would at least think and practice what might need to be said either during the ceremony or at the reception, a rehearsal is a valuable exercise in which you take part. It can reassure everyone about those few coordinating things that are required to give your ceremony that little "wow" moment. Knowing where to stand is pretty easy, but knowing how long it will take you and your bridal party to walk down to your places with music playing is a little harder to "guess" on the day. You don't necessarily need all of the bridal party in attendance for the rehearsal, but they will all need to know who needs to do what on the day. I also provide a sketched outline and a rehearsal run sheet for you to take away and even give copies to those who may not be able to attend the rehearsal. A rehearsal need only require about 30 minutes, and I am guessing that is less time than it takes for you to try on your shoes, flick through bridal magazines or get the boys organised for their suits....

everyone says i need to have cash on the day. but what for?

Michael Pratt Celebrant

Hi there

Hmm...cash on the day ?

If you are planning on going through a take away drive through on the way to the ceremony, then bring cash on the day.

Other than that, I cannot comprehend why you would need to have cash to make payments on the day.

Any professional service provider, be they a celebrant or any other wedding service, will have stated in their terms and conditions and booking information how payment is to be made. A good business will have finalised all of that payment request before the actual day.

Celebrants certainly do not request payment on the day - the focus is on the ceremony, the bride and groom and their guests, and not on the financials.
