FAQ

Years ago, many celebrants were able to get away with fairly boring, purely 'legal' ceremonies without a lot of fun, emotion or consideration of the couple's needs and wants (some ceremonies are still are like this) but thankfully times have changed.

It's important to find a celebrant who is prepared to give you the time to tell them what you have always dreamed of for your special day.

Legally, there is a need to include a couple of things within the ceremony, but the rest of it is totally up to you and the celebrant to design. A good ceremony should be uplifting, sincere and exactly what you want. Most good celebrants should be able to ask you what you want and offer you suggestions throughout the process.

Just like the saying 'Everybody's different', couple's tastes in ceremonies are also different. Some couples want a 'laid back' ceremony, while others prefer something a bit more 'traditional', some like things a bit 'light hearted' while others like to explore the 'pure emotion' of the day. You need to find a celebrant who is prepared to spend time with you, to guide you and to listen to you.

I pride myself of being one of the few 'full time' marriage celebrants in WA who is also able to offer each of my couples a genuinely personalised ceremony. I spend most of my time getting to know what your needs will be on the day, your personality and also your 'story'.

I find out if you're comfortable in front of a group of guests or if you prefer to stand back a bit,  I then design a ceremony that'll make you feel the most comfortable on the day.

I think it's important that each couple gets to celebrate their individuality, so find a Celebrant who will help you craft a ceremony that you'll be proud to call your own.  Try to avoid the 'cut & paste' ceremonies, this isn't what you're paying for!

Each celebrant sets their own prices based on the time they spend on your ceremony, their experience and (believe it or not) ... their Ego!  There is no 'standard' fee, but prices are often range from $450 (usually a new celebrant) up to $900++. Personally, I feel midway is a fair price to charge. On top of this, most celebrants will often charge an additional travel fee if ceremonies are performed outside the Perth metro area (for Perth based celebrants).

The costs should reflect the amount of time a celebrant invests in meeting the couple, researching and preparing a full ceremony, arranging ceremony music (optional), a rehersal and performing the ceremony of the day as well as looking after your document lodgement.

Some celebrants don't include the preperation of all of the legal documentation, I include all of this as part of my service, making the legal process easy & seamless. I get together to help you prepare all of your paperwork, certify your ID and documentation and make sure that everything that needs to be done, is done correctly.

If you're on a limited budget and are happy to pay for a ceremony at the lower end of prices, you may have to expect that your celebrant is just starting out or may be a 'part time' celebrant, and while this is not a bad thing, it's just something to take this into consideration.

If you're prepared to pay for a higher priced celebrant, it's important to determine the amount of time the celebrant is going to invest in your ceremony (usually around 10 hours per ceremony). It is also important to determine if your celebrant is prepared to spend time developing your 'individual' ceremony and not simply provide a 'cut & paste' ceremony. If someone is going to charge you a lot of money to provide you with a professional service, it MUST be professional.

Don't just pay for someone's ego, their 'online' presence or the testimonials on their website (these are difficult to verify), FB testimonials seem to be a bit more reliable.  There are a lot of great celebrants in Perth and many will be within your price range. With the right amount of investigation, you'll find the best fit for you.

I believe it's important to make sure you're getting value for money and above all, you should feel comfortable working with your celebrant.

They must understand YOUR needs.. after all, it's YOUR wedding.

All celebrants need to undergo a number of ongoing training courses intended to bring all celebrants up to a pre-determined standard and to ensure that Celebrants maintain a high level of professionalism, but are they all the same?

As with all individuals, each Celebrant also has their own unique personality and it's this part that makes the process of finding the 'perfect' Celebrant for you, the fun bit.

We all have certain people that we get on with and this is what will help you find the perfect Celebrant for your ceremony. Besides you, the Celebrant plays the most important part of your ceremony, without a Celebrant (or minister) you can't get married, so it's important to make sure you feel absolutely comfortable with the one you choose.

Make sure the Celebrant you eventually choose, has your interests at heart and is not just there to 'self promote or grandstand'. They need to understand you both, your family and friends and to deliver a ceremony that is totally yours.

Chris was amazing as our Marriage Celebrant for our wedding last month (Janurary). After several false starts due to Covid and living interstate he made the process easy and thorough. We had several people comment on how great Chris was and he made the start of our day funny, loving and special in every way possible. Would highly recommend Chris! Thank you!

Chris was the most wonderful celebrant! My partner is not a very chatty or open guy but Chris managed to create a ceremony that described us both perfectly! He was always well spoken (even with my crazy surname), professional and everybody commented about how great it was to hear a genuine and meaningful ceremony and vows. Can't recommend Chris highly enough! Thanks for making us your first wedding of the new decade :)

Chris was fantastic, we had so many comments from people about how amazing he was! I was so lucky to have found such a great celebrant! He was just so lovely, the ceremony just went so great. We were particular with what we wanted, and he did the ceremony so naturally which was exactly what we wanted! We got a bit of unexpected rain but he turned it around so well to become such a special day!

I am a terrible public speaker. How can I get ready for my wedding ceremony?

Hi there. Was hoping for some advice on how to tackle ceremony nerves so I can get through my vows. I really want to write my own vows but have always been terrible at speaking in front of crowds. What can I do ahead of time and on the day?

Chris Temov Marriage Celebrant Perth

There are a few things I tell my 'nervous' couples...    The first is to create a bit of a 'bubble' for you and your partner.  Being able to look at each other while delivering your vows and block out everyone else seems to give people a bit of extra confidence.

Look into your partner's eyes and remember that what you're saying is for them and them only and it's from your heart.    If you've already decided to exchange vows at your ceremony, it usually means that you think that what you have to say to them is important enough to do it publicly so try to not let the emotion of the day sway your decision.

The other thing to remember is to keep it sincere.  If you believe in what you're saying and who you’re saying it too, it won't be a problem for you.  Don’t ‘wing it’, this is usually when you can stumble.

Also try to let your celebrant guide you through.  Let your celebrant know your intentions and your concerns about public speaking, a good celebrant has seen this all before and should be able to give you some tips to keep yourself calm and focussed on what you want to do.

And last of all, don’t let anyone talk you ‘into’ or ‘out of’ what you really want to do.  This is your big day and you should feel total comfortable with everything that happens.         Good luck.

What should we be asking potential celebrants to make sure they're a good fit for us?

What are some of the things we need to consider or ask of a potential celebrant before we decide which one to go with?

Chris Temov Marriage Celebrant Perth

Once you’ve checked out the reviews, seen their included services and are happy with the price, you’ll be ready to narrow down your potential celebrants to the last few for consideration.  Try to make your decision based on your ‘feel’ for them.  By this I mean, that most of us know what kind of vibe you get from someone when you first meet them and usually this feeling is a fairly accurate indication of how well you’ll get on with them.

Unless you’ve seen a celebrant conduct a ceremony or you get a referral from a trusted friend, the only other thing you can usually go on is a review and we all know that most people only show the best reviews, naturally.

But the feeling you get when you sit across from someone when you first meet them, usually can’t be faked.  You’ll either like them or not, you will be comfortable with them or they might not quite hit the mark.     Trust your gut.

Almost every celebrant will have a great reason for doing what they do, most are very professional and sincere and know how to provide a professional service, but there will but a few that you’ll immediately connect with.   That’s the right one for you.

My partner won't be wearing a wedding ring. Does this make the "ring exchange" part of the ceremony seem awkward?

Hello, My partner won't be wearing a wedding ring. Does this make the "ring exchange" part of the ceremony seem awkward?

Chris Temov Marriage Celebrant Perth

Hi, this is not a problem at all, in fact it's quiter common.  The 'ring exchange' can quite easily be modified to only accomodate one ring and the wording changed slightly to make it all flow nicely.  Your celebrant should be able to make it all work seamlessly.  All the best on the day, Chris
