What are things to consider when buying your wedding suit?

Hi :)

Of all things to consider i often find Budget and timeline will be the biggest factors. Allowing yourself the right budget to get what you want is very importatant and will require a little research to find out average costings of say tailor made and off the rack. Your timeline leading up to the wedding will also require some thought, you may want a suit made but only have two weeks, leaving only a off the rack options for instance.

The last things I notice people getting confused about is tailoring for an off the rack suit. Not all tailor stores are the same. If you can find a store that will fit the suit for you then generally speaking you are in safer hands. The risk you run buying a suit from a novice is that it is the wrong size and you will spend too much changing the fit, and still not be happy or worse, not being able to fix the problems.

So ask around, talk to people you know and try to find a trusted store/ tailor in your area.

Hope this helps!

What are the benefits to having a bespoke suit over buying from the rack?

Hi

The biggest benefit is control over the fit and the choice in material. When fitted by an experienced tailor you will find a bespoke suit follows the body more accurately creating a much better fit, it will also be designed and cut with the customers build and shape in mind allowing for a more flattering shape. The quality of construction is also much higher, alongside the fact of being able to choose (with the tailor) suitable cloth to further enhance the look.

A rack suit will be cut 'generally', allowing most builds to fit into the same shape and usually requiring alterations to that shape to complete the fit. The choice of colour/ cloth and fit is restricted to what is available at the time.

Would it be acceptable for a woman to wear white at a gay wedding?

HI

This is always best answered by checking with the wedding couple. if this is not possible then I always suggest that if you are in doubt then dont do it.

All the best

What can the Groom wear for a summer wedding?

We're getting married in February in Brisbane and it's very likely to be hot and sticky. Now, I want my fiance to look sharp, but I don't want him to suffer either. What do you suggest he wear? (Don't worry about best man or groomsmen, we're not having any.) It's a garden ceremony in the shade, and the bride is wearing a simple tea-length dress, if that makes a difference.

Hi Sarah

My favourite for humid climates is linen or linen/cotton mix. If you dont mind a little wrinkling (adds a casual/bohemian look) then these fibres are the most breathable and comfortable in hot climates. A sportsjacket made from these cloths offer the structured look without sharp corperate silhouette.

You should avoid a lined jacket, as most will be in polyester, otherwise look for 'Bemberg' lining wich has better breathability. This will be a very important aspect of the garment and comfort for your fiance :)

From there any cotton chino or wool trouser would be fine with a cotton or linen shirt.

Best of luck!

What colour should the MOTB wear?

The groom is wearing navy blue. The groomsmen are wearing grey tuxedo with navy blue ties. the bridesmaids are wearing pink flowered dresses. Is it alright for the Mother of the Bride to wear navy blue also?

Hi

Of course :)

Mother of the bride wont be involved in the ceremony  so will not look out of place.

Best of luck!

I'm looking for a women's suit for my wedding, with pants. Where can I find one?

Hi

Do not underestimate the benefit of an experienced tailor to build the outfit you are looking for. This would allow you to choose cloth, design and not to mention a tailored fit. Might also save a lot of time going from store to store.

best of luck

What should my groom wear to match my vintage 60s wedding dress?

Hi

The best option would be to take a photo with you when looking at suit stores, that way the store may be able to suggest some suitable (pun intended :)) options, taking into consideration the colour, design and features of your dress. Dont forget to consider the Groom and his build when choosing designs...... an experienced suit person/tailor is invaluable in this situation.

Do I need to have boutonnieres if my groom has a pocket square?

Hi

Depending on the size of  the boutonnieres in contrast to the suit as to whether both will work. I always beleive the boutonnieres are like the ladies 'touch' on the mens outfits, a little more personal than a pocket square.

Apart from the bucks night and suit shopping, what else can the groomsmen do to help?

HI

Things like booking haircuts/shave, picking up any last minute items for the wedding party or even organising lifts for parents or guests who might be in need of assistance if they ahve travelled interstate/overseas.

Thoughts on how to coordinate outfits when having two grooms?

Hi

I have found the best way to tackle this question is to get to know the groom so that you are able to suggest idea's that reflect the personality. A suit is almost always the way to go but whether they match will matter more to the grooms than anyone else.

Recently I made two outfits (white tuxedo's with black trousers - groomsmen in black tuxedo's) which worked fantasticly, and this also set the grooms apart. Alternatively one light and one dark would also work if there were no groomsmen.

Best of luck!

What colour suits for the boys in the bridal party?

We have 2 bridesmaids wearing pale ‘cornflower’ blue for a modern boho beach wedding, we have 4 groomsmen and the groom wants a blue suit but I don’t know what kind of blue, and if it will clash with the girls dressed.. I think a clean white shirt would be best, but don’t know what colour ties. The flowers r natives pinks grey and green.

Hi

I would suggest varying the colours tonally, meaning if the girls are in cornflower blue then opting for a slightly darker blue.

Another way is to have sportsjackets (Blue) with trousers (sand or beige), that way you can change the groomsmen's outfit without effecting the grooms outfit. This is a nice way to add interest and other tones without overloading on the blue theme.

if my hubby to be hires a suit, then it wont have a tailored fit?

does this mean it wont look as good?

Hi

This will very much depend on your fiances' build and shape vs the particular hire suit. A suit can fit some  quite well off the rack with minor alterations, wheras others may need much more work for various reasons.

We do hire well tailored suits that offer a tailored fit, but obviously it is not perfect for all body shapes. Also not all hire suits are the same so its important to shop around.

At this stage we would recomend visiting your local suit professional so you can establish what sort of fit your fiance is, then your options will be much clearer to you both.

should we buy or hire the groom's formal wear and what are pros and cons for each?

Hi

Some very importatnt key points to consider, we get asked this question a lot;

1. Some hire suits are better than very cheap purchase suits.

2. If you purchase, make sure ALL sizes are available before committing.

3. Consider tailoring costs as well as the purchase price when factoring you purchase requirements. Hire suits will have this included.

4. Budget, budget, budget. This is the most important aspect in your decision making. If budget is no object then purchasing is the way to go as you can dictate the quality and fit and colour irrespective of the cost.

....... and most importantly...

Once your budget is decided, shop around. Find the shop that gives you the attention you need as well as the expertise required to help you. If you can, find a shop that does both (hire and sales) because in most cases you will get an unbiased recomendation without the sales pitch and you will also be able to compare the two options against each other.

Best of luck :)

What is the approximate usual cost of formal wear hire?

My partner is asking me how much to budget for, I wanna say like $500-1000, but I'm not sure

Hi Mason

I would suggest a budget of $200 - $250 for hire, as you will want to shop around to find the best quality. These prices should include shirts, vests and ties. Sometimes this option is preferred because it wraps all your costings for suits in one neat package.

Help needed with the men's suits

We are planning on mixed peacock colours for our bridesmaids ranging from turquoise to navy, for the boys, a navy suit and my groom will wear a dinner suit in the same colour. We both really love the idea of a double breasted waistcoat, but are stumped on which colour to put him in. We are considering putting the groomsmen in paisley waistcoats and ties matching their bridesmaids' dresses, but then where do we go with the groom? I'm thinking it could look amazing or it might be a bit much? Please help!!

Hi Deborah

Very light grey would work well with your chosen suit colour and allow a bright tie against it without looking cluttered. Light grey will also smooth things out under the suit allowing single or double breasted vest to be worn without making to big a statement. The groom could then wear a tie to compliment your dress or a strong navy satin.

Best of luck :)

What colour suit will go with my blush wedding dress?

Hi Elise

Classic black in a lounge suit or tuxedo is always a great backdrop for the softer colours, you can then accent with blush accessories ie. pocket square or flower.

A personal favourite would be a rich blue like vivid navy, as these two colours go hand in hand and make for beautiful photo opportunities.

Best of luck

should the groom have his suit jacket on or off during first dance?

My partner and I were having a chat and we got stumped on whether he should or shouldn't wear his suit jacket during our first dance. If he does will he look really stiff but then if he doesn't will he look less formal? He's not wearing a vest either so it'll just be a tie and white shirt

Hi Lorena

At this stage of the wedding it is between you and your fiancé, don't worry about the rest of the world. The formalities are over, you can relax and enjoy yourself. If you are really concerned - consider the photo's (video) and how you want to look for these, but I would imagine you will have many more photo's taken with the groom wearing his jacket.

If the brides dress is ivory, do the groom and groomsmen need to wear ivory shirts?

Or are white shirts okay?

Hi Deanna

No. Consider that men don't wear makeup so it its very important that there natural tone isn't washed by the shirt which ivory tends to do. Most men will look their best in a white shirt for this reason, from a photographic perspective. Consider the white shirt as a canvas to put other colours on as well as allowing the skin tones to be darker.

What colour groomsmen with navy blue bridesmaids - beach/rustic theme?

I would suggest contrasting against the bridesmaids with a lighter colour so your photo's look balanced. A great way to achieve this is by using beige or even light grey depending on what the groom is wearing. A beach or rustic theme can include open shirts in white or sky blue in pure cotton or linen to soften the effect. These softer colours will allow you to have some freedom when choosing the groomsmens
