to do or not to do DIY flowers?

    Postby laus3003 on Mon Mar 04, 2013 7:14 pm

Has any one done their own flowers for their wedding? If so how much did you do? ie) just the bouquets or tables or buttonholes or everything!

    If you have done them....
Was it hard? What advice would you give to some one who is thinking of doing their flowers themselves? Would you do it again? What do you wish you'd known before you started? What was the most rewarding part?

If you are thinking about doing them.....
I'd love to know what your plan of attack is! What are you most looking forward to and what are your biggest concerns.

I am thinking about doing an online wedding flower course so that I can learn some basic techniques etc as well as the best way to look after them etc. I'm not one to get stressed easily and I enjoy being creative. I'd love to know your opinion! :luv1:
    Thanks in advance :D

I didn't DIY my own flowers - I didn't DIY anything! But are you planning to have fresh or fake flowers? i think it would be a lot easier to do it if you had fakes because you can dedicate time to doing it and if it doesn't turn out right you can start over without damaging the flowers. I'm sure there are tutorials on ebay you could have a look at?

My friend was planning to do her own flowers with real flowers. I am not sure I would want to be creating bouquets on the morning of my wedding and what if you cant get the flowers you want on the day?

I am having a silk bouquet, have ordered the flowers and only really have to add some ribbon and a diamonte buckle to finish it off.

flowers arent a big deal for me, I am only having it so its something I can carry at the ceremony and I would feel weird not having one for that part of the wedding (will be nervous so carrying some flowers will be a good distraction from how much my hands are shaking).

My sister is a florist so has given me tips about what sort of flowers to look for etc, but because I am keeping it simple its pretty straight forward.

its the only flowers we are having at the wedding

I personally wouldn't DIY my flowers as I think that a florist knows the best way to present them so that they look their best. The care that goes into the preservation of some of the more delicate ones are something that only a professional would know about. The less stress is the best, is my motto.

Hi!! I thought of this also when I first began planning. Are you comfortable with creating them the night before? I watched a couple tutorials online (few years ago now, so I cant quite remember where or what) but they also explain how florist wrap the stems in wire, to prevent them flopping over during the day, particularly in warm climates. And keep them in the fridge overnight so they are still good in the morning.

I'd be so interested to hear how you go if you decide to, please keep us posted!

I DIYed mine bouquet and buttonholes from fresh flowers the day before my wedding. I had practised a few weeks prior so I knew how I wanted it to look. It all turned out really well, and didn't do a course. So long as you practise then I think you'll be ok. :-) The only thing to keep in mind though is the availability of the flowers you want. I wasn't fussed so long as they were the colour I wanted and the flower was the right size...

I think if you are doing fake go for it. my only concern would be time for doing the real ones on the day or night befor. You will have many other things to stress about, don't make flowers one of them! Unless, you have some amazing BMs, MOBs and friends hanging around XD

I didn't DIY because I knew I wouldn't have the time for it (and I had fresh flowers), however I have done my own flowers for parties.

I think you'll be fine. Just give it a practice run to make sure you're happy with the look.

I'm DIYing, but using artifical flowers. I've had a play around with them a few times and it hasn't been too difficult. I think the key is to keep it simple and practice, practice, practice. I'm making the bouquets, corsages, button holes and something for the flower girls (all artificial). For the reception, I'm still deciding between real and artificial, but they will only be single stems in jars, so not a lot of work needs to go into them.

If you use fresh flowers for DIYing, I think it would be more difficult. I would definitely use wire to keep the flowers on the outside perky for the whole day. My bff got married a few weeks ago and her MIL arranged the flowers. They were stunning, but in 35 degree heat, they started to wilt pretty quickly. That said, a few clever hand positionings kept the flowers in order for the photos.

I'd say give it a go well before the day and see what you think and how you feel. If it's all good, go for it!
