    Wedding rings

    Postby erin86 on Sun Jun 03, 2012 5:39 pm

    Hi Ladies..
FH and I had a look at wedding rings today. FH is getting his from Etsy, he saw a really nice one that he likes, but I am getting mine from a jeweller. It's a different jeweller to where FH got my e-ring because I didn't really like any of their wedders. I am not going with a ring that will exactly match my e-ring, I wanted something a little bit different.
Anyways, the one I like was $2000 (down from $2400 as they are having a sale at the moment) and I really have no idea if this is a good price or not.
So, I was just wondering how much everyone else paid and if $2000 is too much or about right?

Its really an individual thing as to how much you pay... mine was $800.00 and DH's was $260.00 and I was even debating if the $800.00 was too much lol but at the end of the day, I have to wear it for many years to come so I justified it that way and spent the extra $300.00 to get the diamond band instead of plain white gold. It also depends on what style you are after.. see my engagement ring has a really thin band so my wedder is also quite thin which I think makes it cheaper again...

Mine was $150; DH's was $500. I personally didn't want to spend much on my ring - our limit was $500 each ring - but my taste was fairly simple, just a thin white gold band with a row of diamonds.

What kind of ring is it, erin? Without knowing how many diamonds etc its a bit hard to say if that is a good price or not.

Mine was $900 down from $1200- 14ct white gold with 12 tiny diamonds (TDW 0.3ct I think). It quite thin too.

My sister paid $2000 for hers, pretty sure it is 14ct yellow gold, quite thick, with two rows of diamonds across it (couldn't tell you how many carats but my guess would be about 0.5)

From memory, my DHs was about $500? It is 9ct yellow gold.

We paid $1200 for my wedding ring - 14 carat white gold with 14 tiny diamonds in one long row across the top.
Figured I would wear it for years so was prepared to fork out for it (we also had it on layby.

We got DH a Tungston ring as apparently they're a lot stronger & DH works as a tradie. His was $375.

    :-)
There's no earthly way of knowing, which direction we are going. There's no knowing where we're rowing or which way the rivers flowing

I agree with lauralou. Definitely depends on the type of ring.

Mine was $2000, I had it hand made and it's a 2.4mm wide band in 18ct yellow gold with 20 princess cut diamonds (total diamond weight 0.40ct), which is actually more diamond weight than in my E ring! But my E ring is really simple and didn't cost us very much cos we were only 20 and studying at the time! So I wanted my wedding ring to be exactly what I wanted. I found that similar styles in normal retail stores ranged heaps, from $1700-$2600 for essentially half the ring in diamonds. But there were a couple of finishing touches that the manufacturing jeweller could do for me that retail stores couldn't so I went with them. And I love that they were made especially for us!!

If you love your ring and you're happy to pay the price, that's the main thing. Just be sure to get all the details on it and you could maybe even ask for a professional valuation so you know you are getting what you paid for?

    Hope this helps!

I had mine custom made to fit around my e-ring. It's just plain 10ct white gold. Cost me $550.

This is it, with how it fits into my e-ring.

 You sound like me Erin! I don't want a matching band either.

    It is 9ct, 18ct gold/white gold?
What is the thickness and high profile of the ring?
How many diamonds, carat weight, colour, clarity??

I got quoted $700 for a 1.8mm (H) x 2.0mm (W) knife edge, plain platinum band through a reputable retailer. I will probably end up going with the Tiffany band FH said I could have since it's only an extra $140.

I am not sure if you've just visited a shopping centre jewelry store or gone to an actual jeweler but don't forget that all jewelry retailers have huge markups. Even though you're paying $2k for it, you need to think is it actually worth what you're paying? If you take it to a valuer for insurance purposes they may say it is worth less than what you've paid.

If I had 2k to spend on my wedding band I would definitely get it made.

Thanks for all your input girls.
I'm not sure of the specifics as we just had a quick look in passing. It's white gold and its got a row of diamonds and also a row of diamonds on the top side and underneath side (if you can understand that?). That's all I know at the moment, I will get some more information on it when I go back.
I am hoping to get it a little bit cheaper still as a family friend works at the store (a retail store) and said she could give me more of a discount, she just wasn't there yesterday when we went.

Check out online retailers like Bluenile and see what they're charging for a band similar to what you saw and you'll be able to get a better indication of pricing. Metal and diamonds are generally more expensive in Aust than in the US, so you will more than likely be able to get a better price for a similar band if you buy it online.
