How much are you spending on just alterations.

    Postby lil_dancestar on Sat Jun 23, 2012 4:42 pm

    Hi all

I'm just curious to know how much everyone is spending on just their dress alterations. Also did you get them altered through the company you bought the dress with or with someone else?

    Thanks

I spent $200 for alterations where my dress was from. All she did was hem it... Crooked.
Now I'm spending another $650 to get the hem fixed, the bow put in it's proper place and extra panels made up (because they made the waist too small even though I'm the exact same size as when I got measured and it's fitted weird) with the lacing and etc re-done. Its at a new/different place. Because their material is different, it involves taking the modesty panel out and using it to make the extra panels on the dress, then using their slightly different ivory satin, making a new modesty panel. Finding lacing that's similar enough and putting bead work on it as close to the original as possible. Fixing the new panels to the back then bunching the skirt up to match the new panels.

    Mine was $350...

That included hemming it up alot, taking it in almost a whole dress size and taking in the bust area...

I thought it was pretty reasonable for what they had to do!!

I got the alterations done through the bridal shop..

I am so glad you asked this question lil_dancestar!!!

I am in the middle of working out whether to go with bridal shop or looking around.

I need my dress taken in 3 sizes, hem taken up and one piece moved. The bridal shop has said it would be roughly $350 BUT she won't know full price until she sees it again.

I have a lady I know can do it and will charge me only $100-$200 but she can't do the steaming/ironing.

So I am in a bit of a pickle because the bridal shop scrunched it up in it's bag (literally rolled it up and handed it to me!!!) and I don't know whether I am getting ripped off! So my option is to pay extra for alterations to make sure it gets steamed...or save money and find somewhere else to steam it?

I will be interested to find out what some other prices are on alterations :)

I'm paying $300 for taking it in 2 sizes, hem, removing lace, adding extra pleats, changing neckline to sweetheart (quite hard as it wasn't a standard neckline to start with), making hair flower and beaded belt as well.

    Lizvid where are you located??

I know a lady that works from home(she also works for a few bridal companies) and she will be able to alter and steam it!

I'm in western suburbs :) I don't mind paying it if its going to be good work but I just have no idea on pricing or whether her work is any good!

This is a great question! Anyone know anyone good and cheap in Brisbane?
I bought a fantastic dress second hand for $400 and am debating whether to get the dress shortened slightly and cut the train of the dress down a bit. So far the few I have spoken to have quoted me $400, and seeing as that's what I paid for the whole dress, I think that it's to much. Am on a budget as well and can just not justify spending that on alterations.
