Wedding Themes

When you start arranging your wedding, there is so much to consider, and so many options for each aspect of your big day that it can all be a bit overwhelming.  Choosing a theme for your wedding not only makes the day that bit more special, it can also make all those decisions easier for you.

Whether your theme is as simple as a colour scheme, or as detailed as a country or era, you can use it to inspire your outfit, the food you serve, the flowers you choose, the favours you give your guests, and even the location of your wedding.

Here are a few types of themes you might want to choose for you wedding:

• A colour scheme

  If you are having an overall colour scheme for your wedding, you will need to decide what it will be fairly early on.  You can use your chosen colours for your invitations, your bridesmaids’ dresses, your flowers and decorations and your wedding favours.  If you don’t have a particular colour in mind you could be inspired by the colour of a favourite flower, or colours relating to the season you are getting married. Check out the decor at your chosen venue and see if there is a particular colour that would complement it.

• A country theme

  Did you and your fiancee meet in another country, or have you been on a special holiday together? Is there a country that has particular relevance for another reason, perhaps because you will spend your honeymoon there?  You could use that country as the inspiration for your wedding theme.  Just imagine that you met whilst travelling in Japan.  You could serve sushi or other Japanese food as canapes, have your bridesmaids dressed in traditional Japanese outfits, have blossoms in your flower arrangements, and use Japanese symbols as a motif on your invites and stationery.

• A significant era

  Do you and your fiancee have favourite era?  Do you love 1920s films or 1970s music? Using a particular era as a wedding theme can influence the car you choose to arrive in and the style of your bridal outfit.  It can also guide your choice of reception venue as well as the food and drinks served there and the music you will dance to. If you let your guests know the era you have chosen beforehand you may even get a few dresses appropriately.

• Seasonal inspiration

  When is your wedding taking place? The season of your wedding can provide inspiration for the colours, fabrics and food for your wedding.  A spring wedding theme could incorporate fresh colours, spring flowers, white cottons, and light salads, while a winter theme might suit silver and gold, winter foliage, hearty puddings and heavy velvets. You might choose a beach theme for a summer wedding, having a barbeque for your wedding breakfast, and incorporating seashells into your flowers arrangements and wedding favours.

• Dare to be different

  Don’t forget that it is your wedding day and you can do whatever you like to make it special for you.  There are no rules so don’t feel that you have to wear the traditional white dress, hold the reception in a hotel, serve a three course dinner, or waltz your way through your first song. A wedding that suits the personality of you and your fiancee will be a wedding to remember, so discuss your ideas together and don’t disregard anything just because it is not usually done at a wedding.
