Wedding Car Decorations

Decorating a wedding car for the newlyweds to make their getaway is a fun and traditional part of the wedding. Often the style and extent of the decorations is out of your hands, as the car will be accessorised by members of the bridal party, but if you do get the chance to influence the wedding car decorations used on your big day, here are five handy hints and tips.

1. Try to include a sign

You might not want to have ‘Just Married' or ‘Hoot – we just got hitched' scrawled on the side of your wedding car, but if other drivers on the road are aware of the reason for your car accessories they are likely to be happy for you and find them amusing rather than annoying. If possible try to have the sign attached, but if the car must be written on make sure glass pens are being used so that the words can easily be removed.

2. Ribbon is a versatile option

If you want your wedding car decorations to tie in with your wedding theme, try to supply a decent amount of ribbon in your wedding colours. Ribbon is very versatile and can be used to accessorise just about any car. For a more upmarket wedding try using tulle or organza instead of nylon ribbon. You can also buy ready made bows to adorn the boot.

3. Add personalised balloons

Helium balloons in your wedding colours, personalised with your names and wedding date can be a spectacular addition to your wedding car decorations without costing too much. Coloured or metallic balloons will look great blowing in the wind, and if they do become loose helium balloons will drift upwards, limiting the danger to other drivers.

4. Use flowers from the wedding

When you are ordering your wedding flowers, you could check to see whether the florist can design special garlands designed to decorate the wedding car. If you don't want the additional expense, your bridal party may be able to reuse some of the flowers from the ceremony or reception and make them into wedding car decorations if you don't want to keep the arrangements intact. Whatever you do, make sure the flowers are attached firmly to the car with wire twists so that they don't fly off and land on another car's windscreen.

5. Make sure the driver can see

Decorating a wedding car can be great fun, but wedding car decorations should be limited to ensure that the driver's vision is not restricted. A car crash is definitely not the perfect end to a wedding day. Trailing streamers and tin cans tied to the car with string are traditional, but you need to be sure that these aren't going to become tangled in the wheels. Try to appoint someone that is likely to be fairly sober at the end of the wedding reception to check the safety of the car and its decorations before you set off.
