July 2019

Michael from Mel Hill Photography did an amazing job with our wedding in April 2019. From the outset he was very easy to work with, understood our concepts and vision for the day clearly, and helped us plan our time and space requirements really well. His open, flexible, easy going, and creative approach to our wedding photography meant that we had some unique and stunning photos to remember the day by, and Michael’s eye for a shot and hard work throughout the day led to some truly beautiful pictures to share with family and friends.

Mel and Michael did an incredible job in capturing our wedding. They were very friendly to work with and made the whole entire process so easy. We could only afford to have the 4 hour package, and they did so well in making sure they captured as much as they could within that short timeframe. The photos turned out absolutely amazing and they always bring a smile to our faces. We loved how driven they are into creating the best photos – we particularly loved how determined Michael was in capturing us down at the creek no matter how tricky it was to get down there. We trusted his creative vision and they turned out to be the best photos in our collection. Highly recommend them! 😁

June 2019

We had both Mel and Michael as photographers at our wedding. Right from the first email, they were both friendly, professional and happy to answer all of our questions. They both have relaxed and friendly personalities which made them amazingly easy to deal with and helped everyone feel at ease on the day. During the ceremony they were unobtrusive but still got amazing shots and following the ceremony they took some great group/staged shots around the venue. We would not hesitate to recommend Mel and Michael to anyone looking for two amazing wedding photographers.

October 2023

We used this Photo Booth for our September wedding and it was AMAZING. The quality of the pictures, the service, the communication throughout the planning stage were all top-notch and the guests loved having the photo link on their phones! Could not recommend this service more highly!

Engaging with Michael and Mel for our wedding day photography had been the best decision! Michael essentially guided us through planning the day when we enquired with them, not knowing where to start at all. It has been a pleasure communicating with the team. Michael and Mel even rang me the day before to check in, before I got the chance to do so - the professionalism really impressed me. Our wedding day was so enjoyable as well. They made us and our guests feel so relaxed with the photos and helped us controlled our time well. I would most definitely recommend them as wedding photographers!

Do wedding photographers generally do one style best?

Starting to look at wedding photographers and wondered whether they generally have a signature style that they do best or if we can show them inspiration and they can emulate it?

Mel Hill Photography

Most professional wedding photographers do have a signature style or a few styles that they are particularly good at. This style is often evident in the portfolio of work they showcase on their websites or other platforms. Some photographers excel in a photojournalistic style, capturing candid moments in an unobtrusive way. Others may prefer a more traditional or posed style, focusing on classic shots and group photos. There are also those who specialize in a fine art approach, creating images with a strong artistic vision and emphasis on lighting, composition, and mood.

If you're considering a specific wedding photographer, it's important to look at their portfolio and see if their style aligns with what you're envisioning for your wedding photos. This will give you a better idea of their strengths and the kind of photos you can expect from them.

While many photographers are versatile and able to adapt to different styles, they are likely to produce their best work in the style that they're most comfortable with and experienced in. If you show them inspiration photos that are significantly different from their usual style, they may or may not be able to emulate it to your satisfaction.

Therefore, it's recommended to find a photographer whose existing work resonates with your vision. During your initial consultation, you can certainly bring up any specific ideas or inspiration you have, and a good photographer should be able to tell you honestly whether they can accommodate those requests or not.

Remember that wedding photography is a significant investment, and you'll likely be happier with the results if you hire someone whose natural style you love.

Should we have a first look?

Hi there. I can see lots of couples are having first looks. Is the first look a good idea? What's the best part about having a first look and what would be a reason not to do it, from a photography perspective? Thanks!

Mel Hill Photography

Whether or not you should have a "first look" – a moment where you and your partner see each other before the ceremony – is entirely up to you and your partner's personal preferences and the logistics of your wedding day. There are pros and cons to consider for both scenarios.

Pros of a First Look:

  1. Ease Nerves: Seeing each other before the ceremony can help calm any pre-wedding jitters. It can be a private moment to reconnect before the whirlwind of the day.
  2. More Photos: You can capture a wider range of photos before the ceremony, including reaction shots, couple portraits, and possibly even wedding party and family photos.
  3. More Time Post-Ceremony: If you've taken care of most of your photos pre-ceremony, you can move straight to your reception after the ceremony, giving you more time to enjoy your party.

Cons of a First Look:

  1. Tradition: If you or your families have strong feelings about the tradition of not seeing each other before the ceremony, a first look might not be the right choice for you.
  2. Rushing Pre-Ceremony: Depending on the timing of your day, a first look can mean an earlier start to your wedding day schedule, which might feel rushed.
  3. Less Emotion at the Ceremony: Some people feel that a first look can take away from the emotional impact of seeing each other for the first time at the ceremony.

Ultimately, there's no right or wrong answer here. You should discuss this with your partner and consider what will work best for the two of you on your wedding day. If you decide to do a first look, make sure to inform your photographer in advance so they can plan the shooting schedule accordingly.

How to tactfully ask guests not to post any of our wedding photos to socials

What's the best way to handle this request? We really don't want any of our photos shown on social media before we get a chance to do it ourselves. Is this something to include as early as the invitations? Or wait to the ceremony?

Mel Hill Photography

While it's natural to want to share a happy moment like a wedding on social media, it's also entirely understandable if you'd prefer to keep your special day private or if you'd like to be the first to share your wedding photos online. Here are a few tactful ways you can request this of your guests:

  1. Wedding Invitations or Wedding Website: Add a brief note in your wedding invitations or on your wedding website politely asking guests to refrain from posting any photos from your wedding on social media. You could phrase it like this: "We're so excited to share our special day with you. As a personal favor, we're asking that you help us keep our wedding off social media. We can't wait to celebrate with you in person!"
  2. Signage at the Wedding: Consider placing tasteful signs at the entrance or around your venue with a gentle reminder not to post photos on social media.
  3. Announcement at the Ceremony/Reception: Have your officiant or emcee announce it at the beginning of the ceremony or reception. They could say something like: "The happy couple kindly requests that all photos taken today remain private. They appreciate your understanding and cooperation."
  4. Wedding Program: Include a note in your wedding program, if you're having one, with your request.

Remember, it's your day, and it's okay to have requests. Most guests will be understanding and will respect your wishes once they're aware of them. Just be sure to communicate your wishes in a friendly and polite way.
