Weight loss and wedding dresses.

I've been told I need to start looking for my wedding dress, however I'd planned on losing a significant amount of weight by the wedding (9 months away) So my question is, do I look now or wait and how long can I leave it? Thanks

Hi Tracy,

Its best to to give yourself 4 months to focus on losing weights then start seriously looking 5 months before the wedding (its a perfect time to order a dress:) , then continue on loosing weights that way you wont need too much alterations on your dress later. Kind regards. la Belle Bridal

Hi Tracey

Looking for a dress can be daunting especially if you are intending to loose weight. However don't stress even if you intend to loose a signifcant amount we can speak to some of the designers and re measure slightly nearer the time on some occassions. However if this is not an option, when your dress does arrive we can always adjust even if it is a few sizes to be altered.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you need any further information we are always happy to assist.

Kind regards

Hi Tracy,

Thank you for your enquiry! I would strongly advise that you begin the process of looking for your wedding dress now as our gowns take approximately 6 - 8 months to be made. We come across that question quite a lot. A good thing to remember we can always make a gown smaller, but it can be tricky to make it larger. A true example, one of our lovely brides had planned a fitness programme well before the wedding.....unexpectedly broke her foot and couldn't exercise, so she was very pleased she took our advice 8 months ago and ordered the size she was at the time....because now it fits perfectly!

Good luck with your search finding the one. If you make the trip to Melbourne, we would love to meet you and show you our beautiful gowns designed in Australia.

Warm Regards,

As each gown is made by me to fit each bride weight loss is no issue at all. With each fitting I adjust gown as it is required. I work with each bride accommodating her plans for weight loss.

Hi Tracy,

Yes, start looking now! We have brides come to us for custom-made gowns when they can't find anything they like off the rack, and we usually start 6 months in advance. If you do find something, fantastic! You can then chat to an alterations specialist and make sure major weight loss won't affect the design of the dress (or add too much additional cost to alter). If you don't find an off-the-rack gown you like, you'll still have time to look into getting one custom-made. We wish you all the best!

Kind regards,
Riverside Gowns Team

Alterations should be started on your dress no earlier that 4 weeks out and done right up to the day before so your chosen dress will fit your body like a glove no matter how much weight you lose.

Hi! Tracy most wedding boutiques will work with you when determining your dress size, by looking around now you will give yourself enough time to choose your gown carefully and if you place an order you can take advantage of lay-bye terms that most stores offer. The store will be able to hold from placing the order up to at least 6 months out from your wedding and this will give you time to see how your weight loss is tracking before estimating the best size to get you. I hope that this helps.

Hi Tracy, it is good time to start looking for your wedding dress now but there is an awesome way to make sure the dress fits well which is having a lace up back. It can easily take down a few sizes. Also with a business like us, we have an extremely fast turn around time so you can book in a dress with us and wait until 4-3 months before the wedding and ask us to make the dress. From now you can start looking for inspiration, and different features of your dream dress. I have brides who lost significant weight before their wedding and I always hold the dress off closer to the wedding date so the dress fits well and it always works! You should look now. As if you find your dream dress now and you love it on you now , then when you lose the weight you want to lose, the gown will look even more amazing on you.

Most brides lose 6.5 kilos from finding the gown to the wedding day, so I wouldn't stress to much about weight loss. It will happen naturally.
