If the brides dress is ivory, do the groom and groomsmen need to wear ivory shirts?

Or are white shirts okay?

I think Ivory would be the best colour to compliment the Bride.

Hi Deanna

Firstly, Just For Him were voted best Grooms Fashion NSW for the last 4 years and Best Grooms Wear AUSTRALIA 2107 so we do know what we are doing when we give groom styling advice. My advice - they should wear white shirts.

The white shirt looks the best in photographs and if an Ivory Tie etc are worn, they will show up much better on a white base.

Instead of trying to imagine what looks the best, I would suggest you see both options for yourself. We can tell you what we think but at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter what anyone says, it should be what you like. You need to see it for yourself as your eyes don't lie ..... You will know as soon as you see the two options what you prefer.

All the best

Hi Deanna,

Here's a little something about 'The White Shirt" - It's a must have... a shirt that can be worn at any event or occasion. The white shirt is essential to any suiting attire and compliments all other colours of suit. The white shirt can be worn with any colour neck/bow tie and shoe.

I do not think Ivory is the way to go since it may not look best against the skin tones. White on the other hand can be worn over any skin tone and be captured in photos.

As a suggestion, it would be best to accessorise the groomsmen to compliment the bridesmaids dress colour. I speak of neck/bow tie, pocket square, cufflinks. Remember to compliment and not clash colour detailing.

What colour suits is the groom and groomsmen wearing?

No it is not at all necessary for the groom and groomsmen to wear ivory if the bride is. Finding Ivory shirts can be quite difficult in itself. A crisp white shirt with an Ivory Tie/Bow tie to match the brides dress can actually look nicer. The suit tends to look sharper with a white shirt underneath. Not to say you can't do ivory shirts, it is up to personal preference at the end of the day :)

Hi Deanna,

White shirt with ivory vest (groom only) and accessories would be a perfect classic match. Consider this, what colour would it be for their accessories if it's ivory shirt? Ivory accessories on ivory shirt would be disastrous not only on the photos but also guests would only see a block of ivory from a distance due to lack of contrast.

Kind regards,

Hi Deanna

No. Consider that men don't wear makeup so it its very important that there natural tone isn't washed by the shirt which ivory tends to do. Most men will look their best in a white shirt for this reason, from a photographic perspective. Consider the white shirt as a canvas to put other colours on as well as allowing the skin tones to be darker.

best wishes

Deanna, It is important that a base element exists within the formal wear for the men. Most often Black suits were used to provide base, and this is why ivory shirts were used in the past. However, with the common usage of coloured suits means there is now no base element - which is why the white shirt is important. It provides a base line for all the photographs, and for your colour concept.

Most of the other responses mention accessorising with Ivory, and this is a simple way for the groom to match the bride, but it is not the only way. Think of the colour of flowers you are having, or any of your accessories. A groom with a pale complexion and blonde hair may not suit the ivory tone for accessories, and you may need to opt for another colour.

The last thing to remember, and this is the most important thing. If you choose for the ivory shirt, remember to match it exactly. One thing that consultants fail to mention is that on the day, if the ivory's do not match perfectly, then you have discolouration issues, where the shirt or your dress will look dirty. If you have a stylist, discuss this with them, otherwise the menswear store you select to fit your outfits should manage this for you. I hope the big day goes off with only the one hitch ;)

Hi Deanna,

Firstly, congratulations!

I suggest the groom/groomsmen wear a white shirt, and go with Ivory accessories e.g. Pocket Square, Tie/Bowtie. and Flower Pin.

If you go with an ivory shirt, there may be too much ivory in the photos.

All the best!

Hi Deanna,

Most of our brides are in ivory gowns or non-white gowns, and I would say that 99% of grooms will still wear a white shirt, especially if you are adding ivory accessories such as ties and hankies. The white shirt will help make these colors pop and provide contrast in photography. Also, a clean white shirt with black and blue gives the outfit a crisp new feel. Traditionally, ivory shirts were worn with ivory/cream jackets.

Best thing is to try on both options and decide that way. I hope this helps.

Kind Regards,

Spiro
